Western Railway is inviting ₹734.42 crore bids to build a new double line linking New Palghar to Vadhavan Port, with bids closing on 14 October 2026.

Rail access to a port that is still being built

Vadhavan, on the Maharashtra coast in Palghar district, is being developed as a greenfield deep-water port. A port without rail connectivity moves its cargo by road, so this line is part of the port’s basic infrastructure rather than an upgrade to an existing route.

The contract covers a new double line from New Palghar to Varor Station at the port, including electrification works, in the Mumbai Division of Western Railway. The drawing set puts the alignment at roughly 22.4 km, with longitudinal sections running in five-kilometre sheets from Vangaon to Vadhavan Port.

The structure count is where the work sits. The drawings list more than fifty numbered bridges: minor bridges, road under bridges in several standard designs, composite girder crossings, a major bridge at number 47, and a road over bridge at number 6. There are yard layouts for Varor and a holding yard for the port itself.

How it prices

Earnest money is ₹14,68,85,000 against a ₹734.42 crore estimate, two per cent to the rupee, which confirms the figure. There is no tender fee. The contract runs on EPC terms, so design sits with the contractor, and the EPC document is dated 16 June 2026 with one corrigendum since.

Port connectivity work carries its own timing pressure. The rail link has to be usable when the port opens, which tends to mean tighter programme conditions than a standalone doubling project. Bidders should read the EPC agreement on milestones rather than assuming a normal railway schedule.

At ₹734 crore with more than fifty structures and electrification bundled in, this suits an established railway EPC contractor. It is a smaller package than the mega rail corridors, which should keep the field competitive.

What the job puts on site

Fifty-odd bridges and underbridges over twenty-two kilometres makes this a structures programme with formation attached. Piling and foundation work runs on excavators and rigs, with cranes placing composite girders and box sections along most of the alignment.

Concrete demand is steady rather than peaky: boxes, slabs, abutments and yard works keep concrete mixers and batching capacity busy throughout. Formation between the structures needs the usual chain of dozers, motor graders and heavy compactors for blanketing to railway specification, with wheel loaders at the stockpiles. Coastal ground conditions in Palghar mean more attention to foundations than the length alone suggests.
