NHAI has opened bids on both packages of the Ganga riverfront link corridor at Varanasi, ₹6,551.99 crore of work closing on 16 and 17 September 2026.
A new road along the river, to take traffic out of the city
The project connects NH-19 to the Varanasi Ring Road with riverbank connectivity along the Ganga, and its stated purpose is decongestion of Varanasi city. It has been split into two packages that together cover the alignment from km 0.000 to km 18.560.
Package 1 runs from km 0.000 to km 7.926, with a total built length of 20.00 km once the main carriageway, loops, ramps and link roads are counted. It is estimated at ₹3,148.84 crore. Package 2 continues from km 7.926 to km 18.560, totalling 26.039 km of main carriageway, foot over bridges, loops and ramps, at ₹3,403.15 crore.
Both run on hybrid annuity mode under NHAI headquarters, referenced Ganga Corridor Pkg-1 and Pkg-2. The heavy structure content in Package 2 shows in how it is classified: it sits under bridges and structures rather than plain highway work, which tells you where the cost is going.
What the money says about the bidder
Earnest money is ₹31,49,00,000 on Package 1 and ₹34,04,00,000 on Package 2, one per cent of each estimate almost to the rupee. Tender fees are ₹3,20,000 and ₹3,50,000. Bid validity is 120 days on both.
Package 1 was published on 17 June 2026 and Package 2 the following day, each with a corrigendum issued on 20 July 2026 that replaced document sets rather than moving dates. Anyone who pulled the documents in June should re-download before pricing.
Riverbank construction is the technical story here. Building along the Ganga edge means flood levels, bank protection and foundation conditions that a standard highway package does not carry, and it narrows the field to contractors with river-adjacent structures on their record. At over ₹3,000 crore per package, that field is short.
Plant on a riverfront corridor
Elevated and riverbank work changes the fleet mix. Foundations near the bank need piling rigs and long-reach excavators, with cranes and launching equipment carrying the viaduct, flyover and foot over bridge spans that dominate Package 2.
Concrete volume is the other constant. Batching capacity close to the alignment feeding concrete mixers runs continuously through deck and pier work, with wheel loaders holding the aggregate chain together. Where the corridor runs at grade, motor graders and compactors handle formation and approaches.
