India’s drilling contractors are fighting two things at once this season: water tables that keep falling and formations that keep getting harder. Chicago Pneumatic has put a bigger portable machine into that gap. The Chicago Pneumatic CPS 950-300 is rated at a company-stated 950 cfm and 300 psig, and the brand is pitching it at borewell, mining and solar foundation drilling work rather than at general site air.

What Chicago Pneumatic announced
EPC World carried the launch on 7 September and Equipment India the following day, both running the company’s announcement. Chicago Pneumatic is an Atlas Copco brand, and the quote on the release comes from Prasanna Kulkarni, General Manager of the Power Technique Customer Center at Atlas Copco India. Every specification above is company-stated and none of it has been independently measured.
One gap is worth flagging, because a buyer will hit it the moment they go looking. As of this week the CPS 950-300 is not on Chicago Pneumatic’s own India portable diesel compressor range page, which runs from the CPS 175-100 to the CPS 1350-425 and jumps straight from the CPS 850-290 to the CPS 1000-275. That is normal days after an announcement, but it means there is no published datasheet yet to check the claims against.
What does this change for a drilling contractor?
The number that decides the job here is 300 psig, not 950 cfm. Pressure is what drives a down-the-hole hammer; volume is what lifts the cuttings out so the hole stays clean. Machines in the 175 to 200 psig class run out of both as the hole deepens, which is why the deep-borewell fleet has been drifting up the pressure range for several years. A 300 psig unit is squarely a deep-hole tool, not a compaction-yard machine.
The demand behind it is dated and real. On 8 September, Odisha cleared a Rs 8,653 crore scheme for roughly 1.5 lakh deep borewells across 26 districts, which is a drilling-contractor order book rather than an earthmoving one. Solar plant construction adds the other half: pile foundations on a large tracker plant run into tens of thousands of holes, and those are drilled, not dug. The machines that matter to that work are rigs, hammers and high-pressure air, with excavators as carriers and support rather than the production unit.
The excavator-mount option is the part with real money in it. A contractor already running a 20-tonne class machine can carry the compressor on an asset they own instead of buying or hiring a truck chassis, which cuts the entry cost of taking on drilling work. The trade-off: that excavator is then tied to the rig for the season and unavailable for mining or quarry duty. Our take: with no price published, do not judge this on sticker. On a drill compressor, diesel is the biggest single line in the running cost, so the 10 per cent efficiency claim is the one to test. Ask the dealer for litres per hour at working pressure on your own formation, in writing, before signing anything.
