The metal beam crash barrier price per meter in official schedules is ₹2,848 for W-beam and ₹4,018 for thrie-beam in the Chhattisgarh PWD road SOR effective 15 June 2026, and ₹4,436 and ₹5,571 in Uttarakhand’s Champawat revision effective 23 March 2026 (large-project column). Both exclude GST. Puducherry’s PSR 2024-25 pays ₹3,691.14 and ₹4,922.35. Thrie-beam runs 26% to 41% above W-beam, and about 95% of the rate is steel.

The newest schedule in this post is also the cheapest. Chhattisgarh’s 2026 road schedule pays ₹2,848 a metre for W-beam, while the same state’s NH-zone schedule of 2022 pays ₹4,107. Both figures are right. They describe different jobs, and a contractor who quotes one against the other’s scope loses money on every post.

Metal beam crash barrier price per meter in state schedules

Every figure below is the schedule’s completed rate for supplying and erecting the barrier, per running metre of single-face barrier, with the item number and effective date.

Schedule (effective date) Item W-beam, ₹ per m Thrie-beam, ₹ per m Basis
Chhattisgarh PWD, Road SOR (15 Jun 2026) 8.38 A / 8.38 B 2,848 4,018 Excludes GST; royalty and DMF included
Uttarakhand PWD, Block 74-A Champawat, revised (23 Mar 2026) 8.23 A / 8.23 B 4,436 / 4,519 / 4,601 5,571 / 5,674 / 5,777 Large / medium / small project; excludes GST
Uttarakhand PWD, Block 91 Roorkee, 2024-25 (30 Oct 2024) 8.23 A / 8.23 B 4,428 5,562 Large project; excludes GST
Puducherry PSR 2024-25 (14 Aug 2024) 8.23A / 8.23B 3,691.14 4,922.35 GST position not stated
Chhattisgarh PWD, NH Zone SOR (1 Jul 2022) 8.22 A / 8.22 B 4,107 5,580 Includes M15 post footing; excludes GST
Haryana HSR 2021 34.32.1 / 34.32.2 3,220 4,180 Derived considering 12% GST

Uttarakhand prints three columns because its overheads fall with project size, 15, 12 or 10% in the Champawat sheet, plus 10% contractor profit. Its rates are block-specific, so use the block your work sits in.

What the SOR item includes

The item text is close to identical in all five schedules. A W-beam run is a 3 mm corrugated steel rail set 70 cm above the road, bolted through a 330 mm channel spacer to ISMC 150 x 75 x 5 mm posts at 2 m centres. Each post is 1.8 m long with 1.1 m in the ground. Thrie-beam uses the same post section, 2 m long with 1.15 m buried, a deeper rail at 85 cm and a 546 mm spacer. All steel parts are hot-dip galvanised and fittings conform to IS:1367 and IS:1364. The completed rate covers supply, erection, royalty where the schedule says so, plant, overheads and profit.

The governing specification is the MoRTH Specifications for Road and Bridge Works. Chhattisgarh’s 2026 schedule names the 5th revision of 2013 and cites clause 811.3 for this item, while Haryana and Puducherry still quote the older clause 810.

What is charged separately, or not at all

Three things catch bidders out. The first is the footing. Chhattisgarh’s NH-zone item includes an M15 concrete foundation of 30 x 30 x 110 cm under every W-beam post, while its 2026 road item mentions none. That scope difference explains part of the ₹1,259 gap between the two.

The second is end treatment. None of the five schedules carries a separate item for end terminals, so check whether the tender drawing calls for flared or anchored ends and where the BOQ pays for them.

The third is GST. Chhattisgarh’s NH-zone notes say rates exclude GST, that 12% is added only to the estimate, and that the contractor must include GST in the bid. Haryana’s rates already carry the effect of 12% GST. Puducherry’s PSR is silent on its road items. Confirm the rate the tender applies before you compare a bid with any of these.

Single side, double side and median runs

Every rate in the table is for one face of rail. Haryana’s HSR 2021 notes that on a median the W or thrie section is fixed on both sides of the post, and that “extra provision for metal beam railing and spacer is required to be made” depending on the approved design. No schedule prints a double-sided rate, so a median run is priced as the single-face item plus the second rail and spacer, and the department’s estimate should show that addition.

Replacing damaged barrier on maintenance contracts

Black-spot and maintenance tenders often replace bent barrier rather than install new. Uttarakhand prices this as its own item, 10.16, at ₹4,891 a metre for W-beam and ₹6,643 for thrie-beam in the Champawat large-project column, about 10% and 19% above the new-work rate. Haryana takes the other route: item 35.32 pays ₹511 a running metre for the replacement work, labour and machinery only, and the new barrier is paid from the traffic chapter.

The crash barrier rate per meter is mostly steel

Haryana’s HSR splits each rate. For W-beam, labour is ₹165, machinery ₹5 and material ₹3,051 of the ₹3,220 total. Thrie-beam is ₹165, ₹5 and ₹4,011 of ₹4,180. Material is about 95% of the figure, so the price of beam rail and posts on the day you buy decides your margin. Haryana’s 2021 material sheet puts thrie-beam rail at ₹56 a kg; Uttarakhand’s Roorkee sheet, effective 24 August 2024, lists W or thrie-beam rail at ₹75 a kg. Lock the steel price before you lock the bid, the same discipline the GSB material rate post applies to quarry distance.

Those two kg rates come from different states and years, so read them as a reason to get a dated steel quote, not as a trend. A barrier package usually sits inside a road job that also buys bitumen and aggregate, and the bitumen and road material companies in India are the other half of that purchase.

Where machines come in

Haryana’s analysis allows ₹5 a metre for machinery, which pays almost nothing for plant, so any machine on a barrier job earns its keep through speed. Posts go 1.1 m into a compacted shoulder, either driven by a hydraulic post driver or set in dug pits. On an item with a concrete footing, 1 km of single-face barrier means about 500 pits and roughly 49.5 cubic metres of M15 concrete. A backhoe loader such as the JCB 3DX handles the digging, spoil and material shifting along the shoulder, and a pick-and-carry crane like the Escorts Hydra 14 unloads rail bundles and posts at the yard.

If you want this work, live road safety and maintenance packages are listed among tenders and project opportunities, and the larger runs usually come through the EPC companies building India’s highway projects.

A 1 km worked example

Take 1,000 m of single-face W-beam priced on Chhattisgarh’s 2026 road SOR: 1,000 x ₹2,848 is ₹28.48 lakh before GST. Thrie-beam on the same schedule is ₹40.18 lakh. Price the same W-beam on the 2022 NH-zone item and it is ₹41.07 lakh, but that figure carries 500 concrete footings. The schedule you are measured against decides which scope you price, so read the item text in the tender, not the headline rate.

The bottom line

A W-beam crash barrier price in India means little without its schedule. The official figures run from ₹2,848 a metre in Chhattisgarh’s 2026 road SOR to ₹4,601 in Uttarakhand’s small-project column, and thrie-beam from ₹4,018 to ₹5,777. Check the footing, the end treatment, the median second face and GST, then price the steel.
