Contractors on water-supply and drainage jobs ask which pipe companies in India have a plant near their state. In our records, 16 national makers have plants in 18 states and union territories, and Maharashtra has the most, with 10 of them, followed by Gujarat with 9. Regional makers are listed on each state page.

If you run an excavator or a backhoe loader on pipeline work, the distance from your site to the pipe plant affects how soon pipe reaches the trench. When pipe is late, the trench stays open and the machine waits. This list helps contractors and machine owners find the makers with a plant in their state and plan machine hours around delivery dates.

Pipe companies in India: the 16 national makers and what they make

National here means plants in three or more states in our records, with Finolex, Hindware and BirlaNu included below that mark because the records list them as national. The range runs from plastic pipes in PVC, uPVC, CPVC, PP-R and HDPE to heavier pipes in ductile iron, steel and prestressed concrete.

Which machines handle pipes on site?

Four machine types put pipe in the ground. Excavators cut the trench to the depth and width the pipe needs, and a larger pipe needs a wider, deeper trench and a bigger machine. Where the ground is rocky, an excavator with a hydraulic breaker breaks the rock before the bucket digs.

On smaller lines, backhoe loaders dig the trench with the rear arm, while the front bucket carries bedding material and pushes the backfill in, so one machine covers the whole sequence.

Large ductile iron, steel and prestressed concrete pipes are heavy, so cranes lower them into the trench and hold them steady while the joint is made. Plastic pipes weigh much less than the same size in metal or concrete, so the lifting plan changes with the pipe you order.

Once the pipe is bedded and jointed, compactors, from hand-guided plate compactors to trench rollers, press the backfill down in layers, lightly near the pipe and harder once there is cover over it, so the ground does not settle later.

For a short pipeline contract, look at machines on rent or used machines before buying new, and compare equipment finance if you decide to buy.

Most enquired models on DesiMachines for this work. Excavators: Tata Hitachi EX 210 Infra Super+ Series and Volvo EC210; backhoe loaders: JCB 3DX and Bull SD76 BS5 Super Smart; cranes: Escorts F23 and ACE F150.

How do contractors choose a pipe supplier?

Start with distance. Pipe is bulky, so freight from a far plant can cancel out a small saving in the factory rate, and a plant in your state or the next one keeps delivery time short.

Next, check delivery reliability. Ask how many days the plant takes after an order and whether it can send pipe in lots that match what you lay each week.

Ask for a test certificate with each consignment, and check the pipe class or pressure rating against your tender specification. Look for the BIS mark, issued by the Bureau of Indian Standards, where the product carries one; it shows the maker holds a licence for that product.

Then compare credit terms and the minimum order. A small line may need less than the minimum, so ask whether a stockist can supply a smaller lot.

Before you confirm, get the weight and length of each pipe and match them to the machine on site. The guide to excavator sizes and uses helps with that match.

How to shortlist a pipe maker and match your machines

The list names 16 national makers across 18 states and union territories, but the plant nearest your site is the one that counts. Find your state in the state table and shortlist the makers with a plant there or in the next state. Ask each for a delivery date and a test certificate. Then match the pipe you order to the machines on the job, because the weight of the pipe sets the lift. Your state page adds its regional makers and machine dealers.

To bid for pipeline work, see the live water-supply and sewer tenders and plan your machines before you quote.

Plant locations and product ranges change. Confirm current details with the company, and confirm machine prices and finance terms with the OEM, dealer or bank before deciding.
