A transit mixer that lights up a red lamp with six cubic metres of wet concrete in the drum is a different emergency from the same lamp on an empty machine, and that is the part no dashboard chart explains. The lamp itself is easy: red means stop, amber means attend to it soon, green means a function is switched on. The hard part is that your load has a clock on it, so the driver is making two decisions at once, one about the truck and one about the concrete.
A transit mixer is really two machines bolted together: a registered road truck underneath, and a concrete drum on top. On many machines those two halves have separate engines, separate instruments and separate warning lamps. Owners learn the truck dashboard because they drive it every day, and then guess at the mixer end.
Why does a transit mixer have two sets of warning lights?
Because the truck and the drum are separately powered. Transit mixer warning lights therefore come from two places, and on most machines the drum is turned by its own engine rather than by the truck engine. That second engine is called a slave engine (sometimes written as a separate engine drive): a small diesel engine mounted on the mixer frame whose only job is to spin the drum. It has its own key, its own fuel feed and its own set of gauges and lamps, normally on a small panel at the rear or on the side of the frame.
This is not a rare arrangement. Of the 31 drum-and-chassis transit mixers listed on DesiMachines, 22 can be supplied with a separate drive engine and only 9 take their drive from the truck alone. So on roughly seven machines out of ten, the dashboard in the cab is blind to the drum. If the slave engine is losing oil pressure or running hot, the truck dashboard will not tell you. Somebody has to walk back and look.

PTO stands for power take-off: a drive taken directly off the truck’s own gearbox or engine, so no second engine is needed. What do red, amber and green mean on a mixer truck dashboard?
Red means stop safely and switch off. Amber or yellow means a system needs attention but you can usually finish the trip. Green or blue means something is simply on, such as headlamps or the drum drive being engaged.
The colour code is the same convention used on every truck dashboard in India, and it is the same one you will see on our excavator warning lights and backhoe loader warning lights pages. What changes on a mixer is the cost of ignoring red. A red lamp on a parked excavator costs you a repair. A red lamp on a loaded mixer can cost you the load as well, because once the concrete stops turning it starts to set.
One useful rule for a driver who cannot read every symbol: if a red lamp comes on and a buzzer sounds with it, treat it as engine oil pressure, coolant temperature or brakes until proved otherwise. Those three are the lamps that are wired to an audible alarm on almost every truck, and all three destroy something expensive within minutes.
Which warning lights come from the truck itself?
The lamps in the cab are truck lamps, the same ones a tipper on the same chassis would have. That is good news: any commercial vehicle mechanic can read them.

What do the AdBlue and DPF lights mean on a BS6 mixer truck?
They are emission-control lamps, and they exist on every new mixer truck sold in India today. AdBlue is a brand name for diesel exhaust fluid, a urea solution carried in its own small tank and injected into the exhaust to cut nitrogen oxide. A DPF is a diesel particulate filter, which traps soot and then burns it off. Both arrived with the BS6 emission standard, and neither existed on a BS4 mixer, which is why older drivers have never seen these symbols.
Every complete mixer truck we list is of that generation. Five of the ten name BS6 or OBD-II in the engine line of their own listing, and three more carry Ashok Leyland’s i-Gen6 engine family. So if you are buying a new mixer truck in India, you are buying these lamps whether you want them or not.
The important thing for an owner is what happens when they are ignored. An AdBlue lamp is amber at first, meaning top up soon. Let the tank run empty and the truck will derate, which means the engine control unit deliberately cuts power to force you to fix it. A mixer that derates on a gradient with a full drum is a genuinely difficult situation, and it is entirely avoidable by carrying a spare can in the cab.

Which lamps and alarms come from the mixer end?
The mixer end warns you in three ways, and only one of them is a lamp on the dashboard. The first is the slave engine panel, where fitted: oil pressure, temperature and charging for the drum’s own engine, which the cab cannot see. The second is the hydraulic system that turns the drum, where a hot or low hydraulic oil warning shows up on the mixer’s own gauge rather than in the cab. The third is not an instrument at all. It is the sound of the drum.
Drivers who have run mixers for years read the drum by ear, and it is a skill worth teaching a new driver deliberately. The drums on the machines we list turn at 0 to 12 or 0 to 14 rpm, which is slow enough that a change in note is obvious. A drum that is labouring, changing speed on its own, or stopping when the control is still set to mix, is telling you about the drive long before any gauge does.
Water is the fourth thing to watch, and it has no warning lamp at all on most machines. The water tanks on the mixers we list run from 300 litres on a 3 cubic metre Schwing Stetter AM 3 up to 650 litres on the 8 cubic metre Schwing Stetter AM 8 (C2). That water washes out the drum and chute after every pour. Run out of it on a hot day, and the concrete hardening inside the drum becomes a problem no lamp warned you about. Is there a universal transit mixer warning light chart?
No. There is no single transit mixer warning light chart, and you should be suspicious of any that claims to be one. The symbols on the cab dashboard belong to the chassis maker, so a Tata Signa, an Ashok Leyland AVTR and a BharatBenz 2828C each use their own set. The mixer maker adds its own panel on top. Two mixers of the same capacity on two different chassis will not have the same dashboard.
What is broadly common is the colour logic, the buzzer on the three critical lamps, and the shape of the basic engine symbols, because those follow long-standing vehicle conventions. Everything past that is chassis-specific.
So the operator manual for your chassis is the chart. Photograph the warning light page, laminate it, and keep it in the cab. It costs nothing and it settles arguments at two in the morning when a load is waiting.
What should you do when a red light comes on with a full drum?
Deal with the truck first and the concrete second, in that order, because a seized engine ends both problems badly. Pull over safely, switch off if the lamp is oil pressure or temperature, and only then start thinking about the load.
Then work the load problem honestly. Keep the drum turning if the drum still turns, because concrete that keeps moving keeps its workability longer. If the truck engine is dead but the mixer runs on a slave engine, you may still be able to turn the drum, which is one practical argument for the slave engine arrangement. Call the plant immediately and tell them the truth about the delay, since they may be able to divert the load to a nearer pour. Never add water to save a load without the site engineer’s agreement, because water added on the road changes the mix and the strength the structure was designed for.

What do the warning lights tell you about a used transit mixer?
Transit mixer warning lights tell you a lot about a second-hand machine, mostly by what is missing. Start the truck and watch the dashboard through its self-test: every lamp should light for a second or two and then go out. A lamp that never lights at all has usually been disconnected or had its bulb pulled, and on a used mixer that is almost always deliberate. The engine check lamp and the AdBlue lamp are the two most often killed, because they are the two that cost money to satisfy.
Then go to the back and do the same for the slave engine panel if there is one. A rear panel with cracked glass, a missing gauge or wires hanging loose tells you how the drum end has been maintained, and the drum end is the expensive end.
