If you are taking a transit mixer on rent, the number that decides the job is not the drum size. It is the distance from the batching plant to your pour, because hire is quoted per trip or per cubic metre delivered, and a loaded drum has roughly ninety minutes before the concrete stops being worth placing.

A transit mixer is a concrete mixer truck: a revolving drum mounted on a road-registered lorry chassis, which collects ready-mix concrete from a plant and keeps it turning on the way to your site. Renting one is closer to hiring a tipper than to hiring an excavator. It arrives under its own registration with a driver, it needs road permits, and its loaded weight decides whether it can reach the spot where you actually want the concrete.

What does it mean to take a transit mixer on rent?

Taking a transit mixer on rent means paying for the delivery of concrete, not for a machine parked on your site. The truck belongs to the owner or the ready-mix supplier, the driver comes with it, and it leaves when the load is discharged.

This is the first thing that surprises small contractors. A hired backhoe sits on your site all day and the hour meter decides your bill. A hired mixer is on your site for twenty minutes at a time and spends the rest of the day on the road. So the things that cost you money are the distance, the waiting, and the number of loads, not the hours.

The arrangement is set up one of two ways. Either the ready-mix supplier quotes a delivered rate for the concrete, in which case the truck never appears on your bill as a separate line; or you already have concrete, from your own plant or one that sells at the gate, and you hire the truck alone to shift it. The second is a true equipment hire and it is what this guide covers. How is transit mixer hire billed in India?

Transit mixer hire is billed on the load, not on the clock. The three units you will meet are per trip, per cubic metre delivered, and per month for a truck placed on your project full time.

  • Per trip. A flat figure for one full load carried up to an agreed lead distance, with a slab rate for every extra kilometre beyond it. This is the commonest form for one-off pours.
  • Per cubic metre delivered. The rate is multiplied by the volume that actually leaves the drum. It protects you if a truck turns up part loaded, and it is the same basis used for concrete pump hire, which is why the two are often quoted together on one pour.
  • Per month. A truck and driver attached to your site for a fixed period, usually with a minimum guaranteed number of trips or cubic metres. Long metro, highway and township jobs run this way.

Lead distance is the one-way distance from the plant to your site, and it is the single biggest driver of the rate. Two clauses decide whether the quoted figure survives contact with your job. The first is how the lead is measured, because the road distance and the straight-line distance are not the same number, and a rate agreed on one and billed on the other is a dispute waiting to happen. The second is detention, which is the charge for a truck kept waiting at your site beyond a free period. A mixer that waits an hour at your gate is a trip your owner did not get to run. Agree the free waiting time in minutes and the detention rate per hour before the first load moves.

What does a transit mixer cost to rent in India?

We do not publish a transit mixer hire rate, and we would rather say so than print a number we cannot stand behind. Our equipment rental rate card covers the machines we see quoted consistently enough to publish: backhoe loaders, excavators, wheel loaders, road rollers, hydra cranes and self-loading mixers. A transit mixer is not on it.

Every other machine on that card is hired by the hour or the day, so one number describes it. A transit mixer is hired by the load over a distance, so the same truck is cheap on a three-kilometre lead and expensive on a twenty-five kilometre one, and a single rate would be wrong for almost everyone reading it.

What you can do instead is ask for the quote broken into its parts, and then compare like with like across two or three owners:

  • The base rate, and whether it is per trip or per cubic metre.
  • The lead distance included in that base rate, and how it is measured.
  • The rate per extra kilometre beyond the included lead.
  • Free waiting time at the site, and the detention rate after it.
  • Who pays for diesel, and whether the drum’s running time is included.
  • Minimum load size, minimum trips per day, and what happens on a day you order nothing.

Six numbers describe a mixer hire properly. One number does not.

How far from the plant can your site be?

The working limit is about ninety minutes from the moment water meets cement to the moment the concrete is discharged, and that clock, not the truck, is what caps your lead distance. It is why a mixer hire is really a logistics arrangement in the shape of an equipment rental.

The drum keeps the mix turning so it does not set, but it does not stop the chemical reaction. Traffic, a queue at the plant, a closed level crossing or a wait at your gate all spend the same ninety minutes. In city conditions a ten to fifteen kilometre lead can eat more of that clock than thirty kilometres of open highway, so ask about the route and the time of day, not only the distance.

This also decides how many loads one truck can bring you in a day, which is the figure that tells you whether you need one mixer or three. Work your pour out in loads before you agree a rate. A raft needing eleven loads, against a truck that manages six in a day, is a two-truck job, and finding that out on the morning of the pour is expensive.

Will the truck actually reach your pour?

A loaded transit mixer is one of the heaviest vehicles that will ever come to a small site, and its gross vehicle weight is the figure that decides whether your approach road, gate and ramp can take it. Every truck-mounted transit mixer we list publishes this figure, and they fall into two clear groups.

Gross vehicle weight (GVW) is the maximum the loaded vehicle may legally weigh: chassis, drum, concrete, driver and diesel together. Eight of the ten truck-mounted mixers we list run a 28,000 kg (28 Tonne) GVW chassis on three axles, with ten wheels. The two largest run a 35,000 kg (35 Tonne) GVW chassis on four axles. Read those figures as site-access questions. A 5,285 mm wheelbase is a long, stiff vehicle that will not turn inside a narrow compound. Twenty-eight tonnes on three axles is enough to break the edge of a fresh village road or drop a wheel through a covered drain. And a mixer discharges down a chute at the back, so the truck has to reverse to within a few metres of the pour, on ground firm enough to hold it while it stands there.

One thing the spec sheet will not settle is the ramp. The gradeability figures published on these chassis are quoted on several different bases and are not comparable from one brand to the next, so treat a steep approach as something to be walked with the owner rather than looked up. If the truck cannot reach the pour, the answer is usually a concrete pump at the hardstanding. Indian axle-weight and dimension limits for goods vehicles are set under the Central Motor Vehicles Rules and the notifications made under them by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. Your state may add restrictions on particular roads and bridges, and the owner’s permit has to match the route.

Who supplies the driver, the diesel and the permits?

On a transit mixer the driver almost always comes with the truck, because it is a registered road vehicle and the owner carries the liability for it. This is different from a dry hire, where you take a machine and put your own operator on it.

Diesel is the clause people forget. A transit mixer burns fuel in two places: the engine that drives it to your site, and the drum that keeps turning while it waits and discharges. Whether the drum is spun off the truck’s own engine through a power take-off or by a separate small engine changes who notices that cost, and the difference is explained in the guide to the transit mixer drum drive. In most Indian hires the owner supplies diesel and prices it into the rate. Confirm it, because a hire quoted without diesel looks much cheaper than one with it.

Four documents should be on the truck and should be current: registration, fitness certificate, the road permit for the route, and insurance. Ask to see the papers before the first load, not after an incident.

What should you check before you accept the machine?

Check the drum, the water system and the chute, because those three decide whether the concrete you paid for arrives in a usable state. A quick walk round costs you five minutes and it is the only inspection you will get.

  • Is the drum clean and empty? Hardened concrete stuck inside the drum takes away capacity and contaminates your mix. Look in before it is loaded.
  • Do the blades still have shape? Worn internal blades stop lifting the mix properly, so the load turns over instead of mixing, and it discharges slowly. This is the commonest wear item on a mixer and it is covered in the guide to transit mixer parts.
  • Is the water tank full and the pump working? The water is for washing the drum and the chute, not for thinning the mix on arrival. A truck with no water arrives at your next pour dirty.
  • Are all the chute sections there? Extension chutes go missing. Count them, because a short chute means barrowing concrete by hand across your slab.
  • Does the drum rotate both ways under load? It must turn one way to mix and the other to discharge. Watch it run before you sign.

If the truck fails any of these, the time to say so is on arrival. Once the load is in the drum, the ninety-minute clock is running and your options have gone.

Do you pay GST and TDS on transit mixer hire?

Yes to both, and they are separate things that both belong in the quote. GST is added to the hire invoice by the owner. Tax deducted at source is what you withhold from the payment and deposit against the owner’s account, and the rate depends on how the contract is written.

This is a common and avoidable cost on machinery hire, because the rate that applies to hiring a vehicle is not always the one that applies to a works contract. A note on the figures in this guide

Every chassis figure above comes from the specifications published against the truck-mounted transit mixers in our listings at the time of writing, and each is stated with the number of machines it is built from. Where a listing disagrees with itself we have left it out rather than pick the number that looked more likely.

One machine is in that position. The Ashok Leyland AVTR 3825 carries 8×4 in its model name and a 35,000 kg gross vehicle weight, which is a four-axle truck, while the axle-configuration and wheel-count fields on the same listing read as a three-axle vehicle. Both cannot be right. We have flagged it for correction and excluded it from the axle and wheel counts above. Transit mixer on rent: the short version

Hire is billed on loads and distance, not on hours. Fix the base rate, the included lead, the per-kilometre rate beyond it, the free waiting time and the detention rate before the first trip. Work your pour out in loads and check one truck can deliver them inside the day. Walk your approach road and ramp against a 28 Tonne vehicle before you book, and have a plan for the last few metres if the truck cannot back up to the pour.
