Two desks carried the launch and published almost no overlapping specifications. Construction World reported all three machines from Caterpillar’s stall, quoting Gurman Reen of Caterpillar India. Autocar Professional reported the excavator through the dealer, quoting Gainwell Commosales chief executive Manav Kohli. They agree on the machine, application and engine family, though Construction World names the engine as the C13B where Autocar Professional says C13. No Caterpillar India datasheet was reachable at the time of writing, and the dealer’s own range page returned a server error, so every figure here is company-stated.
What does the Cat 355 actually do?
Read the hammer rating before the tonnage. A machine specified to carry a 210 mm breaker is sold as a rock machine, not a bulk earthmover. The buckets say the same: 4.0 cu m severe-duty for abrasive blasted rock, 4.5 cu m heavy-duty when the material is kinder. Pick one and live with the trade-off between cycle size and wear cost.
The 4,040 mm undercarriage is the number that shows up on your transport bill. Over four metres across the tracks is over-dimension for road movement in India, which is why the gauge is variable: it retracts to travel and extends to dig. Budget the permit and the retraction time on every site move.
The 4,500 m and 52 degrees C envelope is written for Ladakh and border road work at one end and the Rajasthan mining belt at the other, and the dealer network Autocar Professional describes, Leh down to Rajpura Dariba, matches it. On cross-shopping, our own verified figure for the Volvo EC650 at the same show is 63,600 kg. Ten tonnes separates them, which means a different bench height, truck match and low-bed. They are not alternatives just because they shared a hall.
The quieter story is the 120 GC, which Construction World describes as a low and medium duty grader for rural road maintenance and finish grading. A cheaper grader tier from Caterpillar signals where the volume work is, and it reads against the district road tranches now being sanctioned.
Our take: the lifecycle pitch may matter more than the machines. Two rebuild centres against an installed base above 14,800 units, plus 1,000-hour filter intervals and bundled service agreements, is a dealer telling owners to rebuild rather than replace. If that pricing is real, the used and rebuilt 40 to 50 tonne market gets more competitive, which moves what your fleet is worth.
