A concrete pump truck is a truck with a concrete pump and a long folding arm bolted on top. That arm is called a boom (the metal arm that folds and stretches), so people also call this machine a boom pump. The boom carries a pipe, and fresh concrete is pushed through that pipe and dropped exactly where you want it — even ten floors up, or across a wet field where no truck can drive.

On most Indian sites you do not own a boom pump. You hire it for the big pour, then send it away. For your regular day-to-day pumping, a smaller line pump that you can own makes more sense. What is a concrete pump truck?

Think of it as three machines riding on one truck:

  • A truck chassis that drives the whole thing to site on its own.
  • A concrete pump — the heart that sucks in wet concrete and pushes it forward under pressure.
  • A boom — the folding steel arm, with a pipe running along it, that carries the concrete up and out.

You back the truck up to a transit mixer (the spinning-drum truck that brings ready-mixed concrete, or RMC). The mixer pours concrete into the pump’s hopper (the open box at the back). The pump pushes it up the pipe on the boom, and the operator swings the boom over the slab and drops the concrete right into the shuttering. One person guides the end hose. No wheelbarrows, no long lines of labour, no ramp.

How a boom pump truck works, step by step

Once the truck reaches site, the operator does this:

  • Sets the outriggers. These are the four legs that spread out and press on the ground, like a table’s legs. They stop the truck from tipping when the heavy boom swings out. Solid, level ground under them is a must.
  • Unfolds the boom. The arm is made of two, three, four or five sections that fold like a Z. Hydraulic power (oil pressure) opens them and points the end pipe where the concrete has to go.
  • Starts pumping. Inside the pump, two pistons take turns — one sucks concrete from the hopper while the other pushes it into the pipe. This gives a steady flow.
  • Places the concrete. A helper holds the soft end hose and moves it along the slab so the pour is even.

Because the boom does the reaching, one pump truck can feed a spot the mixer could never park near — the middle of a big raft foundation, the top of a water tank, or a slab behind a boundary wall.

Boom reach: the one number that decides everything

When people talk about a “36-metre pump” or a “42-metre pump”, that number is the boom reach — roughly how far the arm stretches when fully open. It is the single most important spec, because it decides how tall a building or how wide a slab the machine can serve.

A simple rule: the concrete can go up a little less than the full boom length, because the arm needs some slope to work. As a rough guide (3 metres per floor):

The 36-metre size is the workhorse in India — big enough for most residential jobs, small enough to set up in a tight urban plot. Do not over-buy reach you will never use; a longer boom needs more open space and a bigger truck to carry it.

Other specs that matter

Reach gets you to the spot. These decide how fast and how smoothly the pour goes:

  • Output (m³/hr). How much concrete the pump can push per hour — measured in cubic metres. A bigger raft or a fast slab needs higher output so the concrete does not set while you wait.
  • Pipe (line) diameter. Most booms carry a 5-inch (125 mm) pipe. Bigger stone in the mix (aggregate) needs a wider pipe or it can block.
  • Number of boom sections. More sections (a 4- or 5-fold boom) can bend around obstacles and drop concrete straight down, which a 2-section boom cannot.
  • Pumping pressure. Higher pressure pushes concrete further and higher, and handles stiffer (low-slump) mixes.

For a job, size the pump to the concrete grade and the pour, not to the building height alone. A good supplier will size it for you once they know the slab area and the mix.

Pump truck vs line pump: when do you actually need the boom?

This is where most money is saved or wasted. The boom pump truck and the humble line pump (a smaller pump that pushes concrete through a pipeline you lay by hand) do the same basic job — but they suit very different work.

You need a boom pump truck when:

  • You are pouring high up — a multi-storey slab where laying pipe up the building is slow and risky.
  • The pour is big and fast — a large raft or a whole floor that must go down before it sets.
  • There is no room to lay a long pipeline, or the mixer cannot get close.

A line pump is enough when:

  • The work is at or near ground level — footings, basements, ground slabs, pavements.
  • The site is tight and a big truck with outriggers simply will not fit.
  • You pump regularly in small amounts and it is cheaper to own the machine than to hire a boom every time.

Should you hire or buy a concrete pump truck in India?

For most contractors, the honest answer is hire it. Here is why.

A new truck-mounted boom pump is a large machine built on a heavy truck, and its price runs well into crores. That kind of money only pays back if the machine is out pumping almost every day. Unless you are a ready-mix (RMC) company or a very large builder pouring across many sites, a boom pump will sit idle most of the month — and an idle machine still costs you EMI, insurance and a parked driver.

Hiring flips that. You pay only for the pour. Rates are usually charged per cubic metre of concrete pumped (with a minimum), or as a day rate, and are quoted on request because they change with reach size, city and diesel. Many RMC suppliers send the boom pump along with the concrete as one package. You get the reach for a day, then it is someone else’s cost to keep.

Buy a boom pump only when the maths is clear: steady, high-volume, high-rise work where the machine earns every day. For everything else, hire the boom and put your capital into a pump you will actually keep busy.

If you pump concrete regularly: pumps you can own

Most builders and contractors do not need a crore-plus boom truck. What earns its keep on the average Indian site is a stationary or trailer-mounted line pump — a compact pump, often on a small trailer, that pushes concrete through a pipeline you lay to the pour. It handles footings, basements, ground slabs and steady daily work at a fraction of the cost.

Cost, EMI and insurance

Whether you hire the boom and buy a line pump, or take the plunge on a bigger machine, plan the money side early:
