Road roller speed is really two numbers, not one. Every compactor sold here publishes a travel speed, the fastest it will move when it is only shifting position, and a working speed, the speed it is rated to compact at. Across the 45 compactors listed on DesiMachines, travel speeds run from 5 to 18 km/h and working speeds from 4 to 9 km/h, as per the current August 2026 spec sheets.
The gap between those two numbers is where most first-time buyers go wrong. A machine that travels at 13 km/h does not compact at 13 km/h, and a contractor who rolls at travel speed to finish faster ends up rolling the same stretch again. This guide gives both speeds for all three roller types on the books, explains the third number that sits alongside them, gradeability, or how steep a slope the machine will climb, and shows why the fastest roller in the catalogue is not the biggest one.

What is the difference between travel speed and working speed?
Travel speed is how fast the machine moves with the vibration switched off, driving from one end of a site to another or crawling up onto a trailer. Working speed is how fast it is rated to move while it is actually compacting, with the drum vibrating.
They are different because compaction is not about time under the drum. It is about how many blows the drum lands on each metre of ground. A vibrating drum strikes the surface a fixed number of times per second. Drive faster and those blows spread out over more ground, so each metre gets fewer of them.
Take the L&T 1190 soil compactor as a worked example. Its drum vibrates at 31 Hz on high amplitude, meaning 31 blows every second, and its rated working speed is 7.5 km/h. At that speed the machine covers 2.08 metres every second, so each metre of ground takes about 15 blows. Slow the same machine to 4 km/h and each metre takes about 28 blows. Nothing about the machine changed; only the speed did.
That is the whole reason the working speed figure exists. It is the manufacturer telling you the fastest you can go and still put enough energy into the ground.
On most machines listed here, working speed comes out at roughly half the travel speed. Where a spec sheet quotes only one figure, ask the dealer which one it is before you plan a day’s output around it.
How fast does a road roller travel?
It depends far more on what touches the ground than on how heavy the machine is. The catalogue splits into three classes, and each sits in its own band.

Read across the top row first. Single drum soil compactors are the earthwork machines, the ones on embankments and subgrade, and they are tightly grouped. Seventeen of the twenty-one publish a travel speed between 10 and 13 km/h, the JCB VM117 at the bottom and the LiuGong 611 at the top. There is very little to choose between brands here.
Tandem or double drum rollers spread much wider, from 5 km/h on the JCB VMT330 to 13.8 km/h on the HAMM HD 99i VV, the HAMM HD 109i VV and the Escorts HD 85 PLUS. The spread is not about size. The VMT330 weighs 3,300 kg and the HD 99i VV weighs 9,770 kg, so the heavier machine is the faster one. But the 1,575 kg Dynapac CC800 does 9 km/h, well ahead of the VMT330 that outweighs it twice over.
The surprise is the bottom row. Pneumatic tyre rollers are the fastest machines in the catalogue at 16 to 18 km/h, and they are not light: they run from 10,500 kg to 18,000 kg before ballast. They are quick because they roll on rubber tyres rather than a steel drum, so they can be driven like a wheeled machine between passes.
Does a bigger road roller travel faster?
No. On this catalogue there is no useful link between weight and speed at all.
The heaviest single drum machine on the books, the 22,000 kg SANY SSR220C-8H, publishes a lower travel speed than machines less than half its weight. The lightest machine listed, the 1,575 kg Dynapac CC800, does 9 km/h, slower than most 9-tonne tandems. And the fastest class is the pneumatic tyre rollers, which sit in the middle to upper end of the weight range.
What actually decides it is the drive layout and the ground contact. Steel drums are heavy rotating masses running on a hard, narrow contact strip; the machines are geared for pushing and compacting, not for covering ground. Rubber tyres give grip and let the machine be geared taller.
This matters for a practical reason. If your work is spread across a long stretch, say a village road, a canal bank or a highway shoulder, the time the machine spends travelling between patches is real money. On a job like that a 13 km/h machine will do noticeably more in a shift than a 5 km/h one, even though both compact at about the same speed. If your work is one compound or one short stretch, travel speed barely matters and you should ignore it.
What speed should you roll at?
Use the published working speed as your ceiling, not your target.
The working speed on a spec sheet is a maximum. It assumes good conditions and a material that responds well. On wet clay, on a thick lift, or on the first passes over loose fill, going slower puts more blows into each metre and gets you density in fewer passes.
Three rules that hold on any of these machines:
Keep the speed the same on every pass. Compaction is measured in passes, and a pass is only comparable to the last one if the speed was the same. An operator who speeds up when he gets bored produces a stretch of road with soft patches nobody can find until it fails.
Slow down when you add amplitude. Machines with high and low amplitude settings hit harder on high. On a thick lift where you are using high amplitude to reach the bottom of the layer, the slower speed is doing as much work as the amplitude setting.
Do not use vibration on the finishing pass. The last pass is usually static, drum turning and vibration off, to close the surface. Travel speed is irrelevant there too; you go slow enough to see what you are leaving behind.

What does gradeability mean on a compactor?
Gradeability is the steepest slope the machine is rated to climb, written as a percentage. It is the number that decides whether a roller can work an embankment side, a ramp or a canal bank at all.
The percentage is not degrees, and this trips up a lot of buyers. A gradeability of 45% means the ground rises 45 centimetres for every metre you travel forward, which works out to about 24 degrees, not 45. At the top of our range, 53% is about 28 degrees. At the bottom, 25% is about 14 degrees.
A slope you would call steep by eye is usually a much smaller number than people expect. A 1-in-4 embankment batter, common on Indian highway work, is 25%, inside the rating of nearly every machine here, but only just for some of them.
How steep a slope can a road roller climb?
Single drum soil compactors publish the widest and highest range: 26% to 53% across all 21 machines. The Volvo SD110 sits at the bottom at 26% and the Dynapac CA305D CEV-V at the top at 53%. That is the class doing embankment and subgrade work, so the high numbers make sense.
Tandem rollers publish 25% to 45% across 19 of the 20 machines, from the HAMM HD 109i VV at 25% to the ACE ADD-95 at 45%.
Pneumatic tyre rollers publish 23% to 35% on three of the four machines.
There is a catch in comparing those three ranges, and it is the single most useful thing on this page. The tandem figure is measured with the vibration running and the soil compactor figure is not. The catalogue is explicit about it: soil compactors publish a plain maximum gradeability, while tandem rollers publish maximum gradeability with vibration, a harder test, because a vibrating drum loses grip as it bounces. A tandem rated 45% with vibration is a genuinely better climber than a soil compactor rated 45% without it.
So do not put the two numbers side by side and pick the bigger one. Compare soil compactors against soil compactors, and tandems against tandems, and ask the dealer which condition the figure was measured in if the sheet does not say.
Which speed figures should actually decide your purchase?
For most buyers, in this order.
Working speed matters most, because it sets how much ground you cover per shift at the quality you are being paid for. Multiply the working speed by the drum width and you have a rough coverage figure per pass; divide by the number of passes your material needs and you have your real daily output. Road roller dimensions, including drum width and ground clearance, gives you the other half of that sum.
Gradeability matters if, and only if, you have slopes. Canal banks, embankment sides, ramps into a pit, approach roads on hill work. If all your work is flat, any machine here will do.
Travel speed matters least, and only on spread-out jobs. It is the number to check last, after weight class, drum width and vibration settings.
Two figures buyers over-weight: top speed on its own, and horsepower. Neither tells you how well the machine compacts. Where the published figures could not be used
Every figure above comes from the machines’ own published specifications. Five machines were left out of the ranges because their sheets contradict themselves or their own class, and it is fairer to name them than to let them quietly set a high or low bound.
The SANY SPR260C-10 PRO publishes a travel speed below its own working speed, which cannot be right for any machine. Its three pneumatic siblings all travel at 16 to 18 km/h and work at 7 to 8. The ACE ASD 115 and the SANY SSR220C-8H each publish the same figure for travel and working speed, and on the ASD 115 that figure sits more than twice as high as every other soil compactor listed. The two Escorts EC 5250 machines publish a travel speed roughly double their class while their working speed matches it exactly; their working speeds are used above, their travel speeds are not.
A further seven tandem rollers publish one figure for both speeds rather than two. On five of them this is consistent across a whole model range, so it reads as how that manufacturer writes the sheet rather than an error. But a single figure cannot tell you what the machine compacts at, so those machines are excluded from the working speed range and counted only in the travel speed range. All of these have been flagged for correction.

Road roller speed and gradeability: the short version
Travel speed, the number quoted loudest, is the least useful of the three: 10 to 13 km/h on single drum soil compactors, 5 to 13.8 km/h on tandems, 16 to 18 km/h on pneumatic tyre rollers.
Working speed is the one that decides quality: 4 to 9 km/h on soil compactors, 4 to 8.5 km/h on tandems, 7 to 8 km/h on pneumatic rollers, roughly half the travel speed on most machines. Treat it as a ceiling and go slower on wet or thick material.
Gradeability runs 26 to 53% on soil compactors, 25 to 45% on tandems and 23 to 35% on pneumatic rollers, and the percentage is not degrees: 45% is about 24 degrees of slope. The tandem figure is measured with the drum vibrating and the soil compactor figure is not, so the two are not directly comparable.
