The operating weight of a telehandler is what the machine weighs ready to work — the machine itself, all its oils and coolant, a full fuel tank, the standard fork carriage and the operator. That is a very wide band, and it matters more than most first-time buyers expect. Weight decides which trailer moves the machine, what the ground under it has to carry, and whether the yard gate and the shed roof will let it in at all. Width, height and turning circle decide the same thing from the other direction. Everything below is measured from the machines actually sold here, so you can check your own site against real figures instead of guesses.
How much does a telehandler weigh in India?
Between seven and roughly twenty-four tonnes, depending on how high it lifts. The table below lists every telehandler on the books with its published operating weight, next to what it lifts and how high, because those two numbers are what drive the weight up.

The Manitou MXT 840 K is listed in two variants with identical published figures, which is why the table shows twelve rows for thirteen machines.
Read down the weight column and one pattern stands out. Lifting height, not lifting capacity, is what makes a telehandler heavy. The JCB 540-70 lifts 4,000 kg and weighs 8,498 kg. The Manitou MXT 1740 K lifts the same 4,000 kg and weighs 15,530 kg — nearly double — because it lifts to 17.4 m instead of 7.0 m. The other useful ratio is weight against lift. A telehandler weighs roughly two and a half to four times what it can pick up. If a salesman quotes you a four-tonne lift on a machine that weighs eight tonnes, that is normal, not a bargain.
Why do rotating telehandlers weigh more?
Because they carry a turntable and outriggers that a fixed machine does not. A rotating telehandler has a cab and boom that turn a full circle on top of the chassis, so it can pick from one side and place on the other without moving the wheels. That turntable, the slew mechanism under it and the four outrigger legs that hold the machine steady all add steel.
The split in the figures is clean. The nine fixed-boom models weigh 6,972 to 15,530 kg (7.0 to 15.5 tonnes). The three rotating machines weigh 13,305 to 23,800 kg (13.3 to 23.8 tonnes). All three rotating machines listed here are Manitou, and the heaviest of them weighs more than three times the lightest fixed machine.
For a first-time buyer that difference is a cost you feel twice: once on the trailer that has to move it, and again on the ground and slabs that have to carry it. Buy the rotating machine when the work genuinely needs to place loads without repositioning — steel erection, formwork, precast, tight urban plots. A telehandler is between 2,300 and 2,540 mm wide, 4,670 to 10,060 mm long, and 2,420 to 3,260 mm tall with the boom lowered. The table gives the published figures machine by machine.

Two figures in that table are marked “Not specified” rather than filled in with an estimate. The ACE AT 30 does not publish a turning radius, and the Manitou MXT 840 K’s two listings disagree on ground clearance, so neither number is quoted here. Where the published data does not settle a figure, saying so is more useful than a guess.
The width column is the one worth reading twice. Every telehandler sold here sits between 2.30 and 2.54 metres wide. That is narrower than a backhoe loader with its front shovel, and it is the reason a telehandler gets into plots and lanes that a wheel loader cannot. It is also why the machine still needs a proper gate: at roughly 2.4 metres of solid body width, a 3-metre gate leaves you 300 mm on each side.
Height deserves the same attention. Nine of the twelve stand 2.8 m or less with the boom down, which clears most shed doors and basement ramps. The three rotating machines stand 3.04 to 3.26 m and will not. Measure the opening before the machine arrives, not after. Will a telehandler fit on a trailer, and can it drive on the road?
Every telehandler listed here is under the legal width limit for a vehicle on an Indian road, so transport is a question of weight and height rather than width. Rule 93 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989 caps the overall width of a motor vehicle at 2.6 metres. It allows a construction equipment vehicle up to 3 metres in travel mode, but any width beyond 2.6 m has to be marked with yellow and black zebra stripes front and rear. At 2,540 mm at the widest, no telehandler on these listings crosses that line.
Weight is what decides the trailer. A 7-tonne fixed machine like the JCB 530-70 travels on the same class of trailer that moves a backhoe loader. A 23.8-tonne Manitou MRT-X 3570 needs a low-bed trailer rated well above 24 tonnes once you add the fork carriage and any attachment. Getting this wrong is expensive: an under-rated trailer is a breakdown, a penalty and a delayed pour on the same day.
Height is the trap people miss. A 3.26 m machine on a trailer bed roughly a metre off the ground is over four metres tall on the road. Check the route for low bridges, cable crossings and toll canopies before it moves, not on the day.
Telehandlers can also move themselves. The machines listed here publish travel speeds of 23 to 40 km/h, and all thirteen are four-wheel drive, so short hops between adjacent plots are practical. What ground clearance and turning radius does a telehandler have?
Ground clearance runs from 340 to 460 mm across the eleven machines that publish it, and the minimum turning radius from 3,900 to 5,060 mm across the eleven that publish that.
Ground clearance is the gap between the lowest point of the machine and the ground. On a telehandler that gap is what lets it cross a bund, a kerb, a pipe trench or a rutted approach road without grounding the chassis. The JCB machines sit lowest at 340 mm and the SANY STH844A highest at 460 mm. On a broken village approach road that 120 mm difference is real, though none of these machines is built for the kind of ground a tracked excavator handles.
Turning radius is the tightest circle the machine can turn in. Under 4 metres, as on the Manitou MXT 840 K and MRT-X 1645, is genuinely tight for a machine of this size. The JCB machines at 4,850 mm need close to a ten-metre-wide space to turn around in one movement. Most telehandlers offer more than one steering mode, including four-wheel steer and crab steer, which is what brings the circle down; the SANY STH1056A publishes three selectable modes.
Wheelbase — the distance between the front and rear axle centres — runs from 2,430 to 3,750 mm. A short wheelbase turns tighter; a long one rides steadier with a load up high. That is the trade-off, and it is why the rotating machines use outriggers rather than a longer chassis.
Do telehandlers have a ground pressure rating?
No telehandler listed here publishes a ground pressure figure, and that is expected rather than an omission. Ground pressure is how much weight a machine puts on each square centimetre of ground, and it is quoted for tracked machines because tracks spread the load over a large, measurable contact area. A telehandler is wheeled. Its weight goes into the ground through four tyre contact patches, and that patch changes with tyre size, tyre pressure, load and boom position, so a single published number would mislead.
What you can work with instead is the total weight, the tyre specification and some judgement. A 15-tonne machine on four tyres concentrates far more load per square centimetre than a tracked machine of the same weight. On soft ground, fresh fill, a monsoon-wet plot or over a buried drain, that is the number that matters — and the honest answer is to lay steel plates or timber mats, keep the load low while travelling, and stay off ground you have not tested.
Two more points that come up on site. The machine is heaviest at its rear when unladen, because the counterweight is there, and heaviest at the front when carrying at reach. And a suspended load raises the effective load on the front axle well above what the parked weight suggests, which is exactly what the load chart is for. If you are working over a slab, a basement roof or a filled trench, get the structural limit checked against the machine’s operating weight before it drives on.
How does telehandler weight compare with a backhoe loader?
A small telehandler weighs about the same as a backhoe loader, and a large one weighs more than twice as much. The lightest machine here, at 6,972 kg, sits inside the ordinary backhoe loader weight band; the class figures for backhoes and excavators are in excavator and backhoe weight in India.
The difference in what that weight buys you is the point. A backhoe puts its weight into digging force and a rear arm. A telehandler puts its weight into a counterweight that lets a boom reach forward and up while staying on its wheels. Neither is heavier by accident.
