What is a telehandler used for on a construction site?

A telehandler is used for any job that needs material lifted to a height and placed accurately — the work that sits between what a loader can reach and what a crane is worth setting up for. On a typical Indian building site, that covers a handful of daily tasks.

  • Placing material at height — lifting pallets of bricks, blocks, tiles, or bagged cement up to a working floor or scaffold, so the machine feeds the masons instead of a labour chain carrying it up.
  • Loading and unloading trucks — pulling pallets and bundles off a delivery truck with fork attachments, on ground that a warehouse forklift could never handle.
  • Handling steel and precast — moving reinforcement bundles, shuttering, and precast panels around the site and setting them where they are needed.
  • Reaching over obstacles — placing a load across a trench, over a boundary wall, or into the middle of a slab where a forklift can’t drive and a crane is too slow to reposition.
  • General site loading — with a bucket fitted instead of forks, shifting soil, sand, or aggregate like a small loader when a dedicated machine isn’t on site.

The one skill that runs through all of this is the load chart — the table in the cab that shows how much the machine can safely lift at each height and reach. A telehandler’s safe capacity drops as the boom extends further out, because the load moves away from the machine’s balance point. How does a telehandler lift material to height?

A telehandler lifts to height through its telescopic boom — a hydraulic arm that both raises and extends, carrying the load up and forward at the same time. This is the machine’s signature job and the reason it exists. A forklift lifts straight up a fixed mast and needs level, firm ground; a telehandler can lift a pallet of blocks to a first- or second-floor slab, extend the boom to reach in over the edge, tilt the forks to set the load down flat, and do it while parked on the broken, sloping ground a real site has.

Most telehandlers used in Indian construction are 4-wheel drive with several steering modes, including crab steer (all four wheels turning the same way to move the machine sideways). That is what lets a large machine work close to a structure and tuck into a tight approach. Working heights on the machines sold here run from roughly 6 metres (about 20 feet) on compact models up to 17–18 metres (about 56–59 feet) on the tallest, with lift capacities from around 2.5 tonnes (2,500 kg) to 4–5 tonnes (4,000–5,000 kg) close in.

Can a telehandler load and unload trucks and trailers?

Yes — loading and unloading is one of a telehandler’s most common everyday uses, and it does it better than a forklift on a real site. With forks fitted, the machine drives up to a delivery truck, slides the forks under a pallet, lifts it clear, and reverses away, all on rough or muddy ground where a warehouse forklift would sink or slip. Because the boom extends, the operator can also reach across to the far side of a wide trailer without having to reposition the machine for every pallet.

This is why telehandlers have spread quickly through organised warehousing and logistics parks in India, well beyond building sites. In a godown yard, one telehandler can unload trucks, stack material in racks two or three levels up, and move loads across the yard — jobs that would otherwise need a forklift for stacking and a separate loader for yard work.

Is a telehandler used in farming and agriculture in India?

Yes — worldwide the telehandler grew out of farming before it reached construction, and the same uses apply on larger Indian farms and agri-businesses. On a farm it is used to load and stack bales, lift and tip bags of grain or fertiliser, feed a hopper or mixer, clear silage, and load produce onto trucks. A bucket or a bale spike is fitted in place of the forks depending on the job.

In India this is still a niche compared with construction — most farm lifting is done by a backhoe loader or a tractor front-end loader, which cost less and are more common. But for a large dairy, a sugar or grain operation, or a contractor serving several farms, a telehandler’s reach into a tall store or a high trailer is a genuine advantage that a loader cannot match.

Telehandler vs forklift vs wheel loader — which machine for which job?

The honest answer is that each machine wins at a different job, and the telehandler’s strength is reach. Buy the one that matches your most common lift, not the one that can do everything a little worse. A forklift is cheaper and better for flat, paved, indoor stacking. A wheel loader moves far more loose material per hour but cannot lift to height. A crane lifts higher and heavier but is slow to set up and move. The telehandler covers the middle ground — lifting to height, on rough ground, and driving to the next task on its own wheels.

What attachments change what a telehandler can do?

Attachments are what turn a telehandler from a lifting machine into a general site tool — the boom tip is a coupler, and you fit the tool the job needs. The common ones in India are:

  • Pallet forks — the default, for pallets, bricks, blocks, and bundled material.
  • Bucket — for loose soil, sand, and aggregate, turning the machine into a light loader.
  • Lifting hook or jib — for slung loads like steel, letting the telehandler do a small crane’s work.
  • Work platform (man basket) — to lift workers safely to height for finishing, cladding, or maintenance.
  • Muck or grab bucket — for handling debris, silage, or loose bulky material.
