Volvo EC650: 65-Tonne Mining Excavator Launched in India

Volvo Construction Equipment has put the EC650 mining excavator on sale in India, announcing the machine at bauma CONEXPO INDIA 2026 in Greater Noida on 15 September and saying deliveries can start immediately. For anyone sizing a mining fleet before the post-monsoon buying season, the interesting part is not the launch itself but where the machine sits in Volvo’s India ladder.

The launch came through a company press release issued at the show and was carried by Autocar Professional, whose report matches the release on the engine, the power rating and the 65-tonne positioning. Dimitrov Krishnan, Managing Director of Volvo CE India, framed it around Indian mining running at higher intensity than before. Alongside the EC650 the company showed the EC210, EC215, EC220, EC300 and EC480, the L150 and L120 Electric wheel loaders, and the SD110 soil compactor and DD90 tandem roller.

Where does the EC650 actually sit?

The release calls this Volvo’s flagship entry into heavy mining excavators. Volvo’s own India range page says something more useful than that. It already lists an EC750D at about 72,700 kg and an EC950E at roughly 90,000 kg, both above the EC650. So this is not the top of the Indian range — it is a gap being filled between the EC550E at about 54,500 kg and the EC750D.

That gap is the story for a buyer. The step from 54 tonnes to 73 tonnes is a big one to jump, and contractors who needed something in between have been over-buying a class or running a smaller machine harder than they wanted to. A 63.6-tonne option lets you match the excavator to the tipper fleet you already own instead of rebuilding the haulage side to suit the digger. If your trucks are sized for a mid-60s-tonne loading tool, that arithmetic now works without importing one.

Note the marketing gap too: “65-tonne class” is the pitch, 63,600 kg is the published figure. Not a discrepancy worth alarm, but if you are calculating float capacity and low-bed permits, use the published weight, not the class name.

Our take: the timing reads deliberate. Promising immediate deliveries as the buying season opens is a jab at import lead times, which is where a 60-tonne-plus machine usually costs an Indian buyer three to six months. Whether that holds past the first few units is the thing to test at the dealer, not on the stand. The Equipment-as-a-Service option is worth a hard look if you win tonnage-based contract mining work, because it moves a heavy asset off your balance sheet and onto the job it is actually paid by — but ask what the hourly commitment and the release clauses look like before you treat it as flexible.
