The binding wire price in October 2026 is ₹63 to ₹71.20 a kg on Kerala PWD’s district market rates for October to December 2026, which makes a 25 kg coil about ₹1,575 to ₹1,780 before any GST. Older state schedules of rates print ₹56.35 (Tamil Nadu, 18 gauge, 2025-26) to ₹91 (Maharashtra, 2022-23). No official list read prices 20 gauge apart from 18 gauge, and the wire costs about the same per kg as the TMT bars it ties.

A 1.8-tonne slab cage uses about ₹1,100 of binding wire. That is under 1% of the steel bill, which is why almost nobody checks the rate, and why a dealer can quote you anything. The numbers below are the ones state engineers use when they build an estimate, so you can test a quote against them.

Binding wire price per kg today: Kerala PWD district rates

Kerala’s Public Works Department publishes local market rates for every district each quarter on its PRICE 3.0 portal. The October to December 2026 lists went up between 6 and 12 October 2026. Binding wire is item code 7335, priced per kg, and the same list carries TMT bars, so you can see both rates side by side.

District (LMR place) Binding wire, ₹ per kg 25 kg coil, ₹ (our arithmetic) TMT Fe-500D, ₹ per kg Published
Palakkad (excluding Nelliyampathy and Agali) 63.00 1,575 73.00 12 Oct 2026
Thiruvananthapuram (plain terrain) 68.00 1,700 75.00 12 Oct 2026
Ernakulam (Kanayannur, Aluva, Paravur) 70.00 1,750 72.00 9 Oct 2026
Kozhikode 70.00 1,750 67.00 9 Oct 2026
Thrissur (Mukundapuram, Thalappily) 71.00 1,775 75.00 6 Oct 2026
Kannur 71.20 1,780 72.70 6 Oct 2026

Kerala prints TMT per quintal (₹6,700 to ₹7,500); the column above divides by 100. The list does not say which gauge its binding wire row means. Thiruvananthapuram’s rate did not move between quarters: the July to September 2026 list, published on 13 July 2026, also had binding wire at ₹68 and TMT at ₹7,500 a quintal.

What state schedules of rates print

Every state schedule of rates (SOR) carries a basic rate for binding wire, but most are a year or more old. Use them as a floor and a cross-check, not as today’s market.

Schedule In force from Item as printed ₹ per kg
Tamil Nadu WRD SOR 2025-26 22 Jul 2025 Binding wire, black 18 G 56.35
Tamil Nadu WRD SOR 2025-26 22 Jul 2025 Binding wire, galvanised 18 G 56.35
Chhattisgarh WRD SOR 2025 1 May 2025 Binding wire (excluding all taxes) 74.00
Maharashtra WRD Common SOR 2023-24 15 Oct 2024 Binding wire 71.10
Puducherry PSR 2024-25 14 Aug 2024 Binding wire 60.00
Maharashtra PWD SSR 2022-23 25 Jul 2022 Binding wire (RCC materials) 91.00

The Tamil Nadu WRD Schedule of Rates 2025-26 is still that department’s newest book, and it is the only one here that names a gauge. Haryana’s HSR 2021 printed ₹48, a reminder of how far a basic rate can fall behind the market.

18 gauge or 20 gauge: what changes

Not the per-kg rate, on the official evidence. Tamil Nadu prices black and galvanised 18 gauge wire at the same ₹56.35, and no list read for this article prices 20 gauge separately. IS 2502 (bending and fixing of bars) asks only for annealed binding wire of at least 0.90 mm, to IS 280.

What changes is how far a kg goes. Standard wire gauge 18 is about 1.22 mm thick and gauge 20 about 0.91 mm. By our arithmetic at the density of steel, one kg of 18 gauge is roughly 109 metres of wire and one kg of 20 gauge roughly 194 metres. If a dealer charges a few rupees more per kg for 20 gauge, it can still be cheaper per tie. Thicker 18 gauge is the usual pick for heavy bars, where a thin tie can snap when the cage is walked on.

How the rate tracks TMT steel

Binding wire is mild steel drawn thin and softened, so it moves with the steel market. In Kerala’s October to December 2026 lists it sits at ₹63 to ₹71.20 a kg against ₹67 to ₹75 for Fe-500D TMT, and in Puducherry’s 2024-25 schedule it is ₹60 against ₹60.50 for TMT. If TMT jumps, expect the wire quote to follow. The TMT bar grades and brands guide covers the bar side.

How much wire per tonne of steel

CPWD’s Delhi Analysis of Rates 2014 does not list binding wire by weight. For steel reinforcement it allows ₹47.90 per quintal of bars for “sundries and binding wire” together, and at its own wire rate of ₹53 a kg that buys at most about 0.9 kg per quintal, so roughly 9 kg per tonne. Thin bars at close spacing take more ties per tonne than heavy bars, so treat 9 kg as a planning figure, not a limit.

Worked example: binding wire for one slab

Say the bar bending schedule for a roof slab and its beams totals 1.8 tonnes of steel.

  1. Wire needed: 1.8 tonnes x 9 kg = 16.2 kg. One 25 kg coil covers it with about 9 kg to spare.
  2. Wire cost at Kerala’s ₹63 to ₹71.20 a kg: ₹1,021 to ₹1,153 for 16.2 kg, or ₹1,575 to ₹1,780 for the full coil.
  3. Steel cost at Kerala’s ₹67 to ₹75 a kg for TMT: ₹1,20,600 to ₹1,35,000.
  4. Wire as a share of the steel bill: under 1% if bought loose, about 1.3% if you buy the whole coil.

Add 18% GST if your quote is without tax. Binding wire is heading 7217, wire of iron or non-alloy steel, in Schedule II of Notification 9/2025-Central Tax (Rate) at 9% central GST plus the matching state GST. Offcuts and dropped coil ends are real loss; the material wastage guide sets out the allowances.

Once the cage is tied and checked, the pour is machine work. A self-loading mixer such as the AJAX ARGO 4500 batches on site, and a stationary pump such as the AJAX ASP 4011 lifts concrete to the slab without a line of labourers.

Why your wire cost sits inside the steel rate

On government work you will not see a separate line for binding wire. Haryana’s HSR 2021 says annealed steel wire used for binding “shall not be measured” and is deemed included in the reinforcement rate. Chhattisgarh’s Building SOR of 10 June 2026 prices reinforcement per kg “including cost of binding wire”. So the wire, the ties and the time to tie them all come out of the per-kg steel rate you quote. The same logic applies to masonry, as the brick work rate per cubic meter breakdown shows.

The bottom line

Binding wire costs about what TMT costs per kg: ₹63 to ₹71.20 on Kerala’s October 2026 district lists, ₹56.35 to ₹91 on state schedules dated 2022 to 2025. Buy by the 25 kg coil, plan about 9 kg per tonne of steel, and choose 20 gauge for light bars if it ties more knots per rupee. Before you price a slab package, check the live tenders and building works in your district, and line up equipment finance for the mixer or pump that pours it.

Rates here are the basic and market rates printed by the departments named, on the dates shown; coil prices and per-slab figures are our arithmetic on them and are indicative only. Rates, schemes, specifications and prices change — confirm current terms with the dealer, the OEM or the issuing department before deciding.
