At the contractor gate of a Tata Steel works, a hired loader’s operator gets no gate pass until they have sat the company’s safety induction, and their employer bills nothing without a vendor code. Tata Steel vendor registration is done online, through the Online Vendor Registration System (OVRS) behind the “Join as a Supplier” button on the company’s Procurement page. You fill a short sign-up form, then a detailed form with PAN, GST, PF, ESI, bank details and audited accounts, and after due diligence by the Vendor Management Cell you get an e-procurement login and a vendor code. No fee is mentioned anywhere in the process. Tata Steel’s own disclaimer says registration does not guarantee an invitation to tender.

Tata Steel is the group’s listed steelmaker, with 11 MTPA of capacity at Jamshedpur and 9 MTPA at Kalinganagar including NINL, and in 2025-26 it mined 43.5 million tonnes of iron ore and 6.5 million tonnes of coal from its own leases. It is a different company from Tata Projects, the group’s EPC contractor, which runs its own Ariba-based route set out in Tata Projects vendor registration. Everything below comes from Tata Steel’s Procurement page, the OVRS sign-up page and its vendor manual, and the Integrated Report and BRSR for 2025-26, as read on 2 November 2026.

How Tata Steel vendor registration works in November 2026

The starting point is the Procurement page on tatasteel.com. It shows two live buttons. “For Existing Suppliers” opens the e-procurement portal at tatasteel.co.in, where registered vendors sign in with a user ID, password and OTP. “Join as a Supplier” opens OVRS on a tatasteel.co.in subdomain. A third button, “New Business Opportunities”, sits hidden in the page code with a note that it is under security testing, so Tata Steel publishes no open list of enquiries for outsiders to browse.

Registration happens in two forms. The sign-up form asks for the organisation’s name exactly as on its PAN, a contact person, a mobile number and an email address (both verified by OTP; the email becomes your login), your PAN, a “Tata Steel Reference” field, the nature of business, the location you want to register for, a segment, a category and a sub-category. The reference field is not a sponsor requirement: the manual says to enter “NA” if you know nobody at Tata Steel. You can attach a profile or brochure of up to 4 MB and must accept a data privacy consent.

A Tata Steel Category Manager then reviews the sign-up. If it is accepted, an email brings a link to the detailed form. If it is returned, you correct and resubmit. If your registration is rejected for one service area, the manual says you can apply again for another. Once every stage approves the detailed form, you receive e-procurement credentials and a vendor code by email, and your OVRS login is switched off.

Which documents does Tata Steel ask for?

The OVRS vendor manual on the sign-up page is version 4, dated December 2020, and it is still the manual offered there in November 2026. It splits the detailed form into sections. The service provider and transporter version is the one a machine owner fills.

Section of the detailed form What you upload or declare
A: Company profile Name as on PAN, one office address, deed of the firm, name, phone, email and PAN of the proprietor, partners or directors, and a commercial contact
B: Statutory compliance PAN, GST registration, PF and ESI codes (mandatory for service providers and transporters, with an “NA plus reason” option), MSME number with micro, small or medium indicator
C: Quality ISO 9001, ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001, SA 8000, IATF 16949 certificates, only if you answer “Yes”
D: Affirmative Action Supporting document, only if you claim the category
E: Bank Account number, IFSC, and an RTGS mandate in Tata Steel’s format on your letterhead
F: Safety Safety criteria form for low-risk vendors
G: Financials Audited balance sheet and profit and loss account, at least one of the past three years
H: Declarations Tata Code of Conduct and SA 8000 acceptance, plus a downloaded self-declaration, filled in and uploaded

Every attachment is capped at 4 MB. Licences you upload get an expiry reminder email 45 days ahead. The manual still names OHSAS 18001, a standard since replaced by ISO 45001, so the live form may have moved on in places. Tata Steel’s 2025-26 report also says every supplier commits to its Responsible Supply Chain Policy at onboarding, which now includes the Tata Business Associate Code of Conduct.

Which Tata Steel plants and mines can you register for?

The “Location of Vendor Registration” list on the sign-up form runs to more than 20 entries. These are the ones where earthwork, haulage and yard work are concentrated, with the scale Tata Steel reports for each.

OVRS location option What runs there, per Tata Steel
Jamshedpur-Steel 11 MTPA steelworks
Kalinganagar Expanded from 3 MTPA to 8 MTPA in 2025-26 with a new 5 MTPA blast furnace and a 2.2 MTPA cold rolling complex
Noamundi/Joda (OMQ) Iron ore mines; Noamundi alone has 19 MTPA installed capacity and turned 100 in 2025
West Bokaro Coal; with Jharia, its collieries meet about 25% of Tata Steel’s clean coal needs
Sukinda/Bamnipal/Kolkata (FAMD) Chromite mining and ferro alloys
Vijaya-2 Mines and Sponge Iron (Joda) Iron ore mine and sponge iron unit in Odisha

The category list on the same page includes Mining Contracts, Transportation of Raw Material (Ore/Coal)-Mines, Handling Agents, Industrial Byproducts Processing Centres, Local Services and Project Service. For nature of business, a hire firm would normally pick Service Provider, Service Provider (Sub-Contractor) or Transporter. The form filters the categories once you choose a location and nature of business. We read the page and its manual but did not submit the form, so which category opens for which mine is not something we can confirm.

The safety star rating decides the bigger jobs

Registration gets you a code. The work that pays well needs a safety rating too. Tata Steel’s 2025-26 report says only contractors with at least 3 stars on its contractor safety (CSMS) star rating may take on high-risk work, and it names transportation alongside work at height, hot work, confined spaces and electrical jobs. Ore and coal haulage therefore sits behind that bar. In 2025-26, 1,775 service providers went through the safety competency assessment. Firms rated 4 or 5 stars get special consideration when contracts are awarded, and every vendor employee must finish the safety induction before a gate pass is issued.

Is there a fee, and how do you spot a fake?

No fee field, payment step or charge appears on the Procurement page, the OVRS sign-up form or the vendor manual. We found no Tata Steel notice aimed specifically at fake vendor registration offers. Its fraud alert for buyers says it takes no advance payment from customers, and its notice on fraudulent job offers says it charges nothing and warns that fraudsters spoof Tata Steel email addresses. That notice gives brand.protection@tatasteel.com and the command centre line 9297953471 for checks. Start only from the tatasteel.com Procurement page, and treat any agent who promises a vendor code for money as a fraud.

How long Tata Steel takes to pay, and where suppliers complain

The figures below come from the 2025-26 Integrated Report and its Business Responsibility and Sustainability Report, for Tata Steel Limited in India.

Measure FY2024-25 FY2025-26
Days of accounts payable (standalone) 82 94
Inputs sourced directly from MSMEs and small producers 10% 11%
Active supplier base 8,026 7,464
Local suppliers 2,831 2,233
Business with local suppliers (Rs crore) 8,754 9,610

Watch the first row. The BRSR says payable days rose mainly because of the scale-up of operations and a revision in vendor payment terms. It is an average that includes capital spending, so a hire bill may clear sooner or later than 94 days, but a firm paying a machine EMI should plan for about three months between invoice and money. Enter your Udyam number in Section B so your MSME status is on record from the first order.

For disputes, Tata Steel runs a Vendor Grievance Redressal Committee, which took 22 complaints in 2025-26, a Speak Up channel for ethics issues, and a ProCare service desk for maintenance, repair and spares suppliers.

Machine work a hire firm can quote for

The categories point to four kinds of work: loading and moving ore or coal at the mines, handling at plant yards and slag and by-product sites, civil maintenance under local or project services, and haulage. Mining contracts of any size usually ask for a fleet, turnover and that safety rating, so a two-machine owner’s first Tata Steel work is more likely to come as a subcontractor to a registered contractor. The same applies at SAIL’s plants and at the other producers in the list of steel companies in India. Government steel and mining tenders, which Tata Steel does not run, appear on open tender opportunities.

Stockpile and slag yard work suits an 11.5-tonne wheel loader such as the L&T 9020, with buckets of 1.5 to 3.5 cubic metres (about Rs 50.4–55.7 lakh, indicative, as of Nov 2026). Drain clearing, trenching and bench work need a 20-tonne excavator like the Komatsu PC210-10M0, at 20,900 kg (about Rs 61.8–68.3 lakh, indicative, as of Nov 2026). Cable trenches and road repair inside a works are backhoe jobs, done by a 7.2-tonne machine like the JCB 3DX (about Rs 28.5–31.5 lakh, indicative, as of Nov 2026).

Checklist before you click “Join as a Supplier”

  • Make sure the firm’s name matches its PAN, letter for letter.
  • Have GST, PF and ESI codes ready, or a written reason for any you lack.
  • Keep one or more years of audited balance sheet and profit and loss account, each file under 4 MB.
  • Fill the RTGS mandate in Tata Steel’s format on your letterhead, with the account number and IFSC exactly as the bank holds them.
  • Choose one location and the narrowest category that fits your work; register another later if needed.
  • Keep fleet, operator and safety records for the star rating that unlocks high-risk work.
  • Price your hire rate for a payment cycle near 94 days, then compare excavator models and prices before you commit a machine.

Figures come from Tata Steel’s Procurement page, the OVRS sign-up page and its vendor manual (version 4, December 2020), its notices on fraud and fake job offers, its Integrated Report and BRSR for 2025-26 and its Noamundi@100 page, as read on 2 November 2026. Machine prices are indicative and vary by variant, location and date. Portals, documents and supplier terms change.
