Hydra crane brakes are built two ways on the machines sold in India: fully air-operated brakes, and hydraulic brakes with air assistance behind them. Which of the two a crane has decides how its parking brake behaves, and that is the line on the specification sheet worth reading before you sign anything.

Here is the short version, measured across the 67 pick and carry cranes listed on DesiMachines that publish a usable brake specification, as per the current Sep 2026 specifications. Fifty of them run fully air-operated service brakes. Sixteen run hydraulic brakes with air assistance. And every single machine in that second group, all ten that spell it out, needs the operator to pull a lever to park it, because a hydraulic system has no air tank to hold a spring brake open.

Some words first, in plain terms. The service brake is the pedal the operator presses to slow down. The parking brake is what holds the crane still once it has stopped. Air-operated means compressed air from an on-board compressor does the pushing. Hydraulic means brake oil does the pushing instead. Fail-safe means the brake applies itself when air pressure is lost rather than releasing — the opposite of what most people assume.

What brakes does a Hydra crane have?

Three things: a service brake on the front wheels, a service brake on the rear wheels, and a parking brake. All 68 pick and carry cranes listed publish all three, which makes brakes one of the few systems you can compare right across the class without gaps.

One machine is left out of the counts below. The Terex Franna FR17 publishes the identical string “Hydraulic Disc Brake” in all three fields, and a parking brake is not the same component as a service brake, so that record has been excluded rather than guessed at. Its sibling the Terex Franna FR20 publishes a full, differentiated specification. That leaves 67 machines in the figures.

Brake part What the 67 listed cranes publish Models
Front service brake Fully air-operated 50
Hydraulic with air assistance 16
Hydraulic only 1
Rear service brake Fully air-operated 49
Hydraulic with air assistance 7
Air, through a brake chamber 6
Hydraulic, through a slave cylinder 5
Parking brake Spring-applied, air-released fail-safe 50
Hand lever, mechanically applied 10
Hand valve, air-assisted 6
Air-operated, type not stated 1

Front and rear are not always the same on one crane. Nineteen machines run drum brakes on the front and disc brakes on the rear, which surprises buyers who assume a machine is built one way throughout. The ACE 20XW is a clear example: S-cam drum brakes on the front wheels, air-operated disc brakes on the rear, both worked by a single pedal.
