A backhoe loader’s gearbox holds 14 to 22 litres of transmission oil, depending on the make and model, and it runs on a thin transmission fluid named in the maker’s manual, not on engine oil. A 20-litre bucket of JCB-label transmission oil is listed at about ₹6,000 to ₹6,445 in India, so one change on a 3DX, which takes 17.5 litres, costs roughly ₹5,250 to ₹5,640 in oil, going by seller listings checked on 29 September 2026.

Most people call a backhoe loader a JCB, but the same question comes up on a CASE, Mahindra EarthMaster, Tata Hitachi Shinrai, ACE, Bull or Caterpillar machine. This page covers them all, and the wheel loaders and motor graders that also use a torque-converter gearbox: which oil goes in, how much each machine takes, what a pack costs, when to change it and how to spot trouble early.

Which transmission oil does a backhoe loader use?

The gearbox on a backhoe loader is a synchro-shuttle or powershift transmission with a torque converter. The torque converter passes engine power to the gears through oil instead of a dry clutch, and wet clutch packs inside the gearbox change direction. So the oil does three jobs at once: it carries power, it works the clutches and it cools and lubricates the gears.

JCB builds its own gearbox and specifies a thin 10W fluid for it, sold in India as Transmission Oil+ with drain intervals of up to 1,000 hours; older JCB manuals list it as JCB Special Transmission Fluid. Most other makes buy their gearbox in: the spec sheets of 30 of the 51 backhoe loaders we list name a Carraro transmission, across CASE, Mahindra, Tata Hitachi, Bull, Manitou, BEML, Bobcat and ACE models, and one Bull model uses a ZF powershift. Each maker names the fluid for its own machine in the operator manual, so a JCB fluid is not automatically right for a CASE or a Mahindra, and the reverse. Lubricant companies such as Castrol, Servo, Gulf and Veedol sell 10W transmission and powershift fluids for construction machines.

Three common mistakes to avoid:

  • Engine oil in a gearbox that asks for a transmission fluid. A 15W-40 engine oil is too thick for a converter built for a 10W fluid, and its additives can make the clutches slip.
  • Tractor oil (UTTO) because the local shop has it. Some machines accept it and many do not. Use it only if your operator manual names it.
  • Carrying one grade across machines. Wheel-loader gearboxes differ too: one seller lists LiuGong’s own-label transmission oil as an SAE 15W-40 grade. The grade comes from the manual, never from habit.

This is a general guide based on machine size class. Always confirm the fit with your machine’s operator manual or the manufacturer before buying or fitting.

How much transmission oil does each backhoe loader take?

The published figure runs from 14 litres on the Caterpillar 424 to 22 litres on a four-wheel-drive Mahindra EarthMaster; 49 of the 51 backhoe loaders we list publish it. A 4WD machine holds 2 to 3 litres more than the 2WD version of the same model.

These are the capacities in each model’s published specifications as of September 2026. The full list, with engine, hydraulic and coolant figures, is in the backhoe loader oil and fluid capacities guide. A 20-litre bucket covers one change on every backhoe loader in the table except a 4WD Mahindra, which needs 22 litres.

How much transmission oil do wheel loaders and motor graders take?

Most wheel loaders and motor graders also use powershift gearboxes with a torque converter, and most hold more oil than a backhoe loader. Of the models we list, 52 of 54 wheel loaders and 36 of 42 motor graders publish the figure. Mining-size loaders go far higher, and hydrostatic loaders, which have no powershift gearbox, much lower.

Machine Examples (make and model) Transmission oil
Wheel loader JCB 433-5 and Volvo L90H (21 L), Tata Hitachi ZW225 (27 L), LiuGong 836N (34 L), Hyundai HL930i (36 L), L&T 9020 SX and Komatsu WA380Z-6 (38 L), Hindustan 2021E (41 L), Cat 950GC (45 L) 21 – 45 litres

What is the price of backhoe loader transmission oil?

These are listed prices for new, sealed packs from sellers on IndiaMART and ExportersIndia.

Oil Pack Listed price About per litre Checked
JCB-label transmission oil 20 litres ₹6,000 – ₹6,445 ₹300 – ₹322 29 Sep 2026
Castrol Transmax Offroad 10W 210-litre barrel ₹250 a litre (one listing) ₹250 29 Sep 2026
LiuGong-label transmission oil, SAE 15W-40 (wheel loaders) 20 litres ₹5,360 (one listing) ₹268 30 Sep 2026

At ₹300 to ₹322 a litre, a change costs about ₹4,200 on a 14-litre Caterpillar 424 and up to about ₹7,100 on a 22-litre Mahindra, before the filter and labour. We found no listed price for the CASE, Mahindra, Tata Hitachi, ACE or Bull own-label transmission oils; their dealers price them on request. Veedol sells an EX3 range of engine, transmission and rear axle oils for backhoe loaders, in 17-litre packs; we did not find a seller price for the transmission oil in that range. Whichever brand you choose, match the specification printed on the pack to the one in your manual before you compare the price.

How often should you change backhoe loader transmission oil?

Most backhoe loaders in India have the transmission oil changed every 1,000 hours, with the level checked every day and at each 500-hour service; your maker’s manual sets the exact interval. The transmission filter is changed with the oil or earlier. A machine working one shift a day reaches 1,000 hours in about four to five months.

Check the level on level ground and in the way the manual describes. On many powershift gearboxes the level is read with the engine idling and the oil warm, because oil drains back from the converter when the engine stops and a cold, engine-off reading shows too high. The backhoe loader maintenance schedule lists every check by hour, and the backhoe loader filter kit guide covers the filters changed alongside.

What are the signs of transmission oil trouble?

  • The machine takes a second or two to move after you shift from forward to reverse.
  • It slips or loses pull on a slope or when pushing the loader bucket into a heap.
  • The transmission temperature gauge climbs during roading or loading work.
  • The oil on the dipstick looks milky (water has got in) or dark and smells burnt.
  • Metal flakes show on the drain plug at the change.

A low level causes most of these, so check it first. If the level is right and the symptoms stay, stop and call a mechanic: a slipping clutch pack gets worse quickly and a gearbox repair costs many times the price of a bucket of oil.

Which oils go into a backhoe loader?

A backhoe loader has four or five separate oil systems, and each takes its own oil. None of them can be swapped for another.
