What counts as municipal and waste management equipment?
Municipal work is what a city body pays for outside its offices: cleaning open drains and nallahs before the monsoon, clearing old dumpsites, running waste yards, and repairing streets, footpaths, parks and ponds. Much of it is small-scale earthmoving in tight spaces. Backhoe loaders, skid steer loaders and mini excavators fit narrow lanes. Long reach excavators clean wide nallahs and lakes from the bank, wheel loaders move waste at processing yards, and small rollers and graders finish street work.
Waste management also uses machines DesiMachines does not list. Refuse compactor trucks and tippers collect and carry the waste. Mechanical sweepers clean the roads, jetting and suction machines clear blocked drains and sewers, and trommel screens sort old waste during biomining.
Where is this work concentrated in India?
Old city dumpsites are where much of the heavy municipal machine work now sits. By March 2023, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs reported that Maharashtra and Telangana had cleared the most legacy waste, followed by Tamil Nadu, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra had finished the most dumpsites.
In Delhi, the same ministry is working with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi to clear the three old dumpsites at Bhalswa, Ghazipur and Okhla.
Storm water drains are the other large job. In Uttarakhand, the state’s Urban Sector Development Agency is building storm water drainage and sewer networks under a project that covers Dehradun, Haldwani, Nainital and Tanakpur. Each state page lists the machines, dealers and tenders for that state.
Who funds and runs municipal and waste work?
City works are paid for by central missions and awarded by municipal corporations and state agencies. Waste contractors run much of the collection, processing and dumpsite clearing. Machine owners usually reach this work by hiring to the contractor who wins a ward, a drain package or a dumpsite. The list is alphabetical, not a ranking.
