What counts as demolition equipment?
It is the set of machines that takes a structure down and clears the site: buildings, old bridges, water tanks and plant structures, plus breaking concrete and rock and loading out the debris before redevelopment. On most Indian sites the base machine is an ordinary excavator, backhoe loader or skid steer loader. The breaking is done by the attachment on its arm: a hydraulic breaker for slabs and rock, a concrete crusher that cracks concrete and frees the steel, a shear for steel sections, or a grapple for sorting. We do not list attachments as products, so the cards below show the base machines and the guides further down explain the attachments.
Some demolition plant is not listed on DesiMachines: purpose-built high-reach demolition machines, tippers for carting debris, and the crane with a wrecking ball. Tall chimneys and cooling towers are sometimes brought down by controlled blasting, which is specialist work done under the explosives rules.
Where is demolition work concentrated in India?
Demolition follows redevelopment, so most of it is in large cities where old buildings make way for new ones. In Delhi, the Union urban development ministry signed an agreement with NBCC and the Central Public Works Department to redevelop seven old government colonies, including Sarojini Nagar, Netaji Nagar and Nauroji Nagar, replacing the old housing with new flats, according to the Press Information Bureau. In Maharashtra, the Mumbai Building Repairs and Reconstruction Board of MHADA handles the repair, reconstruction and redevelopment of old cessed buildings in the island city of Mumbai.
In the national capital region, which takes in parts of Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, the Commission for Air Quality Management has directed the state pollution control boards and the Delhi Pollution Control Committee to inspect construction and demolition sites, according to the annual report of the environment ministry.
Across India, the environment ministry rules on construction and demolition waste apply to every demolition, renovation and repair of a structure, and the producer of the debris is responsible for managing it. The Central Pollution Control Board runs the portal where producers and recyclers register. Each state page lists the machines, dealers and tenders for that state.
Who sets the rules, awards the work and does the demolition?
Demolition sits between public bodies that order or regulate the work and contractors that carry it out. The table lists the main public bodies and specialist contractors whose own sites describe their work; a fleet owner usually reaches demolition jobs by hiring to such a contractor or to the builder who will redevelop the plot. The list is alphabetical, not a ranking.
