What counts as municipal and waste management equipment?

Municipal work is what a city body pays for outside its offices: cleaning open drains and nallahs before the monsoon, clearing old dumpsites, running waste yards, and repairing streets, footpaths, parks and ponds. Much of it is small-scale earthmoving in tight spaces. Backhoe loaders, skid steer loaders and mini excavators fit narrow lanes. Long reach excavators clean wide nallahs and lakes from the bank, wheel loaders move waste at processing yards, and small rollers and graders finish street work.

Waste management also uses machines DesiMachines does not list. Refuse compactor trucks and tippers collect and carry the waste. Mechanical sweepers clean the roads, jetting and suction machines clear blocked drains and sewers, and trommel screens sort old waste during biomining.

Which municipal machines do buyers ask about most?

The order follows the enquiries buyers sent us over the last four months, with no more than two models from one brand.

Which brands make these machines?

The brands with the most models listed in these classes. Each name opens the range of that brand.

Where is this work concentrated in India?

Old city dumpsites are where much of the heavy municipal machine work now sits. By March 2023, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs reported that Maharashtra and Telangana had cleared the most legacy waste, followed by Tamil Nadu, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra had finished the most dumpsites.

In Delhi, the same ministry is working with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi to clear the three old dumpsites at Bhalswa, Ghazipur and Okhla.

Storm water drains are the other large job. In Uttarakhand, the state’s Urban Sector Development Agency is building storm water drainage and sewer networks under a project that covers Dehradun, Haldwani, Nainital and Tanakpur. Each state page lists the machines, dealers and tenders for that state.

Who funds and runs municipal and waste work?

City works are paid for by central missions and awarded by municipal corporations and state agencies. Waste contractors run much of the collection, processing and dumpsite clearing. Machine owners usually reach this work by hiring to the contractor who wins a ward, a drain package or a dumpsite. The list is alphabetical, not a ranking.

AMRUT 2.0 Central mission under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs that funds city water supply, sewerage and the revival of ponds and lakes

Frequently asked questions

Which machines do municipal bodies use for drains and waste?

Backhoe loaders, skid steer loaders and mini excavators do most drain cleaning and street work. Long reach excavators desilt nallahs and lakes from the bank, wheel loaders handle waste at processing yards, and small rollers and graders finish streets. Refuse compactors, sweepers and suction machines are used too, but they are not listed here.

Which machine is used for nallah desilting?

Small drains are cleaned with mini excavators and backhoe loaders working from the road. Wide nallahs, canals inside cities and lakes need a long reach excavator, which digs from the bank without entering the water. The silt is then loaded onto tippers and carried away.

Which machines does biomining of legacy waste need?

Biomining digs old waste out of a dumpsite, spreads it in rows to dry and then screens it into soil, stones, plastic and other streams. Excavators dig and turn the heaps, wheel loaders feed the screens and load the sorted output, and tippers carry it away. Trommel screens and tippers are not listed here.

Is a skid steer loader or a backhoe loader better for city work?

A skid steer turns in its own length, works inside sheds and narrow lanes and takes many attachments, but it travels slowly between sites. A backhoe loader digs as well as loads and drives itself from ward to ward, so it suits drain and street jobs spread across a city.

Where can I see drain and waste tenders that are open now?

The tender list on this page shows storm water drain, landfill and city works packages that are still open, closing soonest first, with the states they are in. It is rebuilt twice a day, and the tenders page carries every open tender.

Can I finance or insure a machine for this work through DesiMachines?

The finance page compares lenders and lets you work out an EMI, and the insurance page explains what a machine policy covers. Both are linked on this page.
