Road roller dimensions are the outside measurements of the machine: how long it is, how wide, how tall, and how much space sits between its belly and the ground. These are the numbers that decide whether a machine can reach your work at all. A roller that compacts beautifully is useless if it cannot turn into your lane, clear your compound gate, or come off the trailer without fouling an overhead cable. What are the standard road roller dimensions in India?
There is no single standard, because the machines listed here do three different jobs. The catalogue splits into single drum soil compactors (21 machines), tandem or double drum rollers (20 machines) and pneumatic tyre rollers (4 machines). Each class sits in its own band, and the bands barely overlap.

Read the table by class, not by the overall span. The widest single drum soil compactor is only 280 mm wider than the narrowest one, and every machine in that class is over 5.4 m long. The tandem class is the one that moves: it holds both the smallest machine on the list and machines nearly as big as a soil compactor.
Two machines are missing an overall width figure in the catalogue (both are the Dynapac CC425, listed twice), and one soil compactor does not publish an operating weight. Those gaps are left as gaps here rather than filled with a guess. Confirm them with the dealer before you plan around them.
How wide is a road roller?
Width runs from 870 mm to 2,410 mm (2.9 to 7.9 ft) across the machines listed, and it is the dimension that most often decides whether a job is possible. Only the tandem class goes genuinely narrow. Every soil compactor listed is at least 2,130 mm wide and every pneumatic roller at least 2,270 mm, so if the approach to your work is tight, the machine has to be a tandem or a small walk-behind size roller.

One thing to be clear about: overall width is not the width you compact. Overall width is the widest point of the machine, measured across whatever sticks out furthest. The strip the machine actually presses is the drum width on a roller, or the tyre spread on a pneumatic machine, and both are smaller. How long and how tall is a road roller?
Length runs from 2,095 mm to 6,797 mm (6.9 to 22.3 ft). The split by class is sharp: every soil compactor listed is between 5,400 mm and 6,797 mm long, while tandem rollers start at 2,095 mm. The longest machine on the books is the SANY SSR220C-8H at 6,797 mm, which is also the heaviest at 22,000 kg (22 tonne).
Height runs from 2,300 mm to 3,635 mm (7.5 to 11.9 ft), and this is where a common assumption fails. The tallest machines listed are not the heaviest ones. They are pneumatic tyre rollers: the Volvo PT220 at 3,635 mm and the L&T 2490 HD at 3,590 mm, both of which weigh less than the biggest soil compactor. A pneumatic roller carries a ballast compartment above its axles, which you fill with water, sand or steel plates to add weight, and that box sits high.
Every ride-on roller listed here is over 2.3 m tall. That matters more than it sounds. Add the deck height of a trailer and the loaded machine is well over 3.5 m, which is the point at which low cables, tree branches, shop awnings and older railway underbridges start to become your problem rather than the transporter’s.
Eighteen of the tandem rollers publish a second, lower height figure measured to the top of the steering console instead of the top of the canopy. Those figures run from 1,585 mm to 3,070 mm, and on most machines they sit 600 to 900 mm below the overall height. That gap tells you how much of the machine’s height is canopy and protective structure rather than machine. Whether the canopy on a particular model can be folded or removed for transport is a question for the dealer, and worth asking before you buy.
Why does ground clearance differ so much between roller types?
Ground clearance is the gap between the lowest fixed part of the machine’s underside and the ground. Across the 45 machines listed it runs from 180 mm to 520 mm (7.1 to 20.5 inches), and it separates the two main classes more cleanly than any other dimension on the spec sheet.
Every tandem roller listed has a ground clearance between 180 mm and 374 mm. Every single drum soil compactor listed has a ground clearance between 375 mm and 520 mm. The two bands do not overlap at all: the highest tandem sits 1 mm below the lowest soil compactor. With 41 machines across the two classes, that is not a coincidence.
It follows the work. A tandem roller runs on a prepared surface, usually fresh asphalt behind a paver, which is flat by definition. It has no reason to carry its belly high, and sitting low keeps its centre of gravity down. A soil compactor works on raw fill, embankment, gravel and stone, where the ground is uneven, stones stand proud and the machine has to climb the layer it just placed. It needs the clearance, and the makers give it.
The practical reading is simple. If you are looking at a machine for earthwork, embankment or sub-base and its ground clearance is under 375 mm, check carefully what it is actually built for. And if you plan to move a tandem roller across rough, unmade ground to reach a site, remember you may be driving a machine with 180 mm of clearance over ruts, which is roughly the height of a house brick standing on end.
How much wider is the machine than the strip it compacts?
Less than most buyers expect, which is good news if you compact against kerbs and walls. On the soil compactors that publish both figures, the machine’s overall width is 130 mm to 270 mm more than its drum width. On tandem rollers the gap runs 62 mm to 360 mm. So on a typical machine the body sticks out by roughly the width of a hand on each side, or less.
That means a roller can generally work much closer to an edge than it looks like it can. It does not mean it can compact right up to a wall: the drum still has to stay off the obstruction, and the overhang decides how far off. On the Dynapac CC1250 CEV-V, with 62 mm between the drum and the widest point of the machine, you can work very tight. On the L&T 990HFi, with 360 mm, you cannot.
Two soil compactors in the catalogue publish an overall width exactly equal to their drum width, which would mean zero overhang on both sides. That is unlikely to be right, so those two machines are left out of the range above and the figures have been raised with our team for confirmation with the manufacturer. Anywhere else on this page, where a figure looked doubtful it has been excluded rather than adjusted.

Will a road roller fit down your road and through your gate?
Measure three things before you decide, and measure them yourself rather than trusting an estimate.
The narrowest point of the approach. Not the road, the narrowest point on it: a gate post, a culvert parapet, a shop that has crept onto the lane, a temple wall. Compare that against the machine’s overall width and leave working room on both sides, because the machine has to be steered through, not squeezed through.
The tightest turn. A long machine needs a long swing. Soil compactors listed here have a wheelbase between 2,880 mm and 3,345 mm and are all over 5.4 m long, so a right-angle turn from a narrow lane into a narrower gate is often the real obstacle rather than the gate width itself. Tandem rollers run from a 1,350 mm wheelbase upwards, and the small ones turn in very little space.
Anything overhead. Cables, branches, canopies and underbridges, on the route as well as at the site. Use the machine’s overall height, and remember it is taller still while it is on the trailer.

What do these dimensions mean when you move the machine?
A road roller does not drive itself between sites at any useful speed, so almost every move is on a trailer. The dimensions decide which trailer and which route.
Weight is the first question, and the road rollers guide carries the operating weights by class. A 1,575 kg machine and a 22,000 kg machine are not the same transport problem. Length and width decide whether the load overhangs the trailer bed, which changes what markings, escorts and permissions the transporter needs. Height decides the route, because a tall machine on a high deck cannot go under everything a truck can.
Ground clearance matters at both ends of the journey, when the machine climbs the ramps. A soil compactor with 470 mm of clearance goes up a steep ramp without touching. A tandem roller with 180 mm can ground itself on the ramp break, which is why loading a low machine wants a longer, shallower ramp and someone watching the belly.
Rules on load dimensions, permissions and escorts vary by state and change from time to time, so confirm the current requirements with your transporter or the relevant state transport authority rather than working from a figure quoted anywhere online, including here. Which dimensions should actually decide your choice?
For most buyers the order is this.
Width first, if access is tight anywhere on your regular work. It is the dimension with the widest spread across the catalogue and the one that rules machines out completely.
Ground clearance next, if you work on raw ground. It is the cheapest signal on the spec sheet of what a machine was designed to do, and it is reliable.
Height, if your routes have low cables or old underbridges, which is common on district and village roads.
Length and wheelbase last, unless you regularly work in confined yards or make tight turns off narrow lanes.
None of these should outrank the compaction match. A machine that fits your lane but cannot compact your layer in a sensible number of passes is the wrong machine, and how compaction actually works is the place to start on that. Weigh dealer support and parts availability in your district too. A machine with slightly awkward measurements and a service centre nearby will earn more than a better-shaped machine you cannot get repaired.
