Is it worth overhauling a ten-year-old hydra, or should you sell it? Overhaul it if the boom, the boom mounting and the chassis are free of cracks, because seals, wear pads, rope, clutch and engine work are routine jobs. Sell it if the structure is cracked or badly welded, because no amount of hydra crane repair makes that machine easy to certify or to sell later. Either way, count the hire days you lose while the crane stands, and plan for a competent-person test after any repair to the boom.

The question usually comes with a quote attached: a 14-tonne hydra whose boom creeps down overnight, a winch that slips under load, and “full overhaul” written on one line above one number. Does that number make sense against a new machine? That is the sum this post sets out.

Why we do not print a hydra crane repair cost

The same complaint can be four different jobs. A boom that settles may need a seal kit, a holding valve, a new cylinder rod or, rarely, a cylinder. A noisy boom may need wear pads, or it may have a bent section. Labour rates differ from Faridabad to a district town, and the price of an OEM seal kit is not the price of a local one. Any single number we printed would be wrong for most readers.

What we can give you is what the bill is made of, the questions that keep a quotation honest, and the overhaul-or-sell sum, which you can run with your own figures. The signs that tell you which part is wearing out are covered in the guide to hydra crane parts and what wears first, so this post starts where that one stops.

The repairs a hydra owner actually pays for

A standard hydra has no slewing ring. The boom is fixed to the front of the machine and the crane steers by bending in the middle. Escorts Kubota’s Hydra 14 brochure describes a fully synchronised hydraulic boom, a fourth section that is manually pinned on the 4-part version, and derricking (raising and lowering the boom) through double-acting jacks. Those parts set the repair list.

Job What usually sets it off What the bill is made of
Boom wear pads and slide adjustment Knocking or jerking as the boom extends, metal marks on the sections Pads, shims, grease, labour to pull the sections. Cheap if done before steel rubs on steel
Telescoping cylinder reseal Boom creeps in under load, oil inside the boom Seal kit, labour to remove the cylinder from inside the boom, hydraulic oil. A scored rod adds rechroming or a new rod
Lift (derricking) cylinder and holding valve Boom settles with the load up and engine off Seal kit or valve, oil, testing the hold afterwards
Boom crack or weld repair Crack found at a section, the mounting or the luff bracket Structural welding, possibly a new section, then a test and examination before use
Winch and brake Load creeps down on the hook, rope damage Brake parts, rope, labour; the rope is often due at the same time
Articulation joint and king pin Play at the hinge, wander on the road Pins, bushes, bearings, labour
Engine, clutch or gearbox overhaul Smoke, oil use, clutch slip on creep travel Parts, machining, labour, and the longest time off hire

Two notes on that table. Escorts Kubota fits what it calls a counter balance protection valve in the lift circuit of the Hydra 14 to stop the boom “from sudden lowering in case of hose leakage”, which is why a settling boom points to that valve or to the seals. And if you run one of ACE’s 360-degree full-slew pick-and-carry models, slew ring and slew drive repairs join the list, which a standard hydra never needs.

A cracked boom is a different kind of hydra crane repair

Seals, pads and pins restore the crane. A weld on a boom section or the boom mounting changes its structure, and three costs follow.

The first is the test. The Building and Other Construction Workers (BOCW) Central Rules 1998, rule 56, required every lifting appliance to be tested and examined by a competent person “after it has undergone any alterations or repairs liable to affect its strength or stability”, on top of the yearly thorough examination. The OSH Code 2020 has been in force since 21 November 2025 and replaces the BOCW Act, so confirm with your state labour department which rules now govern the examination. Whatever your state’s rule, a client site will not let the crane in without a current certificate, so the examination belongs in the quote. The yearly and five-yearly checks are set out in the post on crane rental business profit.

The second is resale. The used hydra crane buying guide tells buyers to walk away from cracks or welding around the boom mounting, however good the price looks. Every repair you do there is one a future buyer will find.

The third is who does it. A boom weld needs a qualified welder, a written procedure and a record of what was done. Ask the workshop for that record in writing. If they cannot give it, the competent person examining the crane later has nothing to check the repair against.

Authorised network or local workshop?

Both OEMs sell the service side as part of the machine. The Hydra 14 brochure lists “warranty and post warranty service”, on-site service through its dealers, a field diagnostic vehicle and genuine spare parts and lubricants, backed by 80+ dealers and 200+ service touchpoints. ACE’s product support page says its dealers and area offices work from 100+ locations, with a Product Support Division based in Faridabad.

Use that network while the machine is under warranty. ACE’s annual report for 2025-26 notes that it gives warranties on certain products and undertakes to repair or replace them if they fail to perform during the free warranty period. Read your own warranty terms before anyone outside the network opens a covered part. After warranty, a good local hydraulic shop with a genuine seal kit is fine for reseals and hoses. Keep boom structure, the winch brake and the load indicator with people who can document their work.

What a hydra crane repair quotation should list

  • Each job on its own line: reseal, pads, valve, weld, winch, engine. Never one line called “overhaul”.
  • Seal kits and parts by name, and whether they are genuine or local.
  • For a cylinder: is the rod being reused, rechromed or replaced?
  • For any weld: where, how long, and whether a section is being replaced instead.
  • Hydraulic oil quantity and grade, and a new filter.
  • The number of days the crane will be in the workshop.
  • The warranty on the repair, in months or hours, in writing.
  • Who arranges the test and examination afterwards, and who pays.

Overhaul or sell: the sum to run

Put the four routes side by side with your own numbers. The only prices we can state are the new ones. The Escorts Hydra 14 is listed at about ₹19.5–21.5 Lakh and the ACE 14XW at about ₹17.1–20.9 Lakh (indicative, as of Oct 2026), ex-factory before transport, registration and taxes.

Route What you pay Days off hire What you end up with
Repair only what failed The job, plus the test if it touched the boom Fewest The same old crane, working
Full overhaul All the jobs at once, plus the test Most An old crane with fresh wear parts
Sell and buy new New price minus what the old crane fetches, plus a new EMI Only the handover gap A warranty and a current emission standard
Sell and buy used Price gap plus the deferred repairs on the used one Handover gap, then its own repairs Someone else’s history

The cost that decides most of these is the idle day. While the crane is in the workshop, the EMI, the operator’s wages and the insurance still arrive in full. So the true price of an overhaul is the invoice plus every lost day times what the crane would have earned on it, less the diesel you did not burn. If that total comes close to the gap between a new crane and what your old one would sell for, sell.

Selling is also easier than it was. ACE’s Annual Report 2025-26 calls the pre-owned equipment market “an important growth avenue”, pointing to “structured refurbishment programs, trade-in models, and certified used equipment platforms”. Ask the dealer what your crane is worth as a trade-in before you sign an overhaul quote. The same four-way comparison for a worn engine is laid out in the post on engine overhaul cost.

Book the repair and the examination together, in your slow months, so the crane loses those days once. If you are weighing a newer machine, compare current pick and carry crane models and prices before you commit to the workshop.

The bottom line

Repair a hydra with a sound structure; seals, pads, ropes and engines are what these machines are built to have replaced. Treat any crack in the boom or chassis as a sell signal unless the repair is documented and the crane passes a test afterwards. Make every quote list its jobs and its days, and price the lost hire alongside the invoice.

When the overhaul quote plus the idle days starts to look like a down payment, run the replacement option properly. Compare new hydra and pick and carry crane prices and check equipment finance to see what the EMI on a new crane would be.

Rates, schemes, specifications and prices change — confirm current terms with the OEM, dealer, bank or insurer before deciding. Machine prices are indicative ranges taken from our listings in Oct 2026; brochure details are from the Escorts Kubota and ACE documents named.
