Choosing a breaker chisel comes down to two things: the shape of its working end, and the diameter your breaker is built to take. The diameter is not really a choice, because it is fixed by the breaker model. The shape is where the decision sits, and the wrong shape still works — it just works slowly, and it wears out much faster than it should.
A breaker chisel is the thick steel point that sticks out of the bottom of a hydraulic rock breaker. It is the only part of the breaker that touches the rock, and it is a wear part, which means it is meant to be used up and replaced. Most people call it the chisel. Dealers and manuals also call it the tool, the point, the moil or the bit, and all of those mean the same thing.

What does a breaker chisel do?
Inside the breaker there is a heavy steel piston. Hydraulic oil from the machine drives that piston up and down at high speed, and every stroke lands on the flat top of the chisel. The chisel carries that blow down into the rock.
So the chisel is not cutting. It is delivering a hammer blow, hundreds of times a minute, and cracking the material apart from the inside. That is why the steel is so thick and why the end shape matters: the shape decides how the energy spreads once it enters the rock.

What are the types of breaker chisel?
Four shapes cover almost every job on an Indian site. They differ only at the working end; the shank, which is the plain part that sits up inside the breaker, is the same on all of them for a given breaker model.
- Moil point: a round, tapered point, like a very fat pencil. It concentrates the blow into one small spot. This is the general-purpose tool and the one most breakers are sold with.
- Chisel (also called wedge or flat): the end is flattened into a blade. It spreads the blow along a line instead of a point, so it splits material that has layers or an existing crack.
- Blunt: the end is simply flat, with no point at all. It puts a wide shock into the material rather than penetrating it.
- Pyramid: a point with four flat faces instead of a cone. It sits between a moil and a chisel in behaviour.

If most of your work is one kind of material, keep a second tool of the right shape on the site. Changing a chisel takes minutes. Working all week with the wrong one costs diesel, hours and a tool.

What size breaker chisel does my breaker take?
The size is decided by the breaker, not by you and not by the machine. Every breaker model is built around one shank diameter, and only a tool of that diameter will fit.
Order by the breaker model number stamped on the breaker body, not by the tonnage of your excavator. Two breakers that suit the same 20-tonne machine can take different tools. The common way buyers waste money is to ask for “a chisel for a 20-ton Poclain” and receive something that does not go in.
Three numbers describe a tool, and a dealer will ask for all three:
- Shank diameter: measured across the plain upper section. This is the fitting size and it has to be exact.
- Total length: the whole tool, top to tip.
- Working length: how much sticks out below the breaker. This is what decides how deep you can break before the breaker body itself hits the ground.
If you have lost the model number, take the old tool to the dealer. Matching against the worn one is safer than measuring a rounded tip with a tape.

When should a breaker chisel be replaced?
A chisel is replaced on wear, not on hours. Two tools on the same breaker can last very different lengths of time depending on the rock and the operator. What you watch for is shape and diameter.

A mushroomed top is the one operators ignore most often, because the tool still breaks rock. It is also the one that damages the breaker, because that spread lip hammers against the front head and the bushes on every stroke.
Worn tools can sometimes be re-pointed by grinding the tip back to shape. Grinding is fine if it is done gently and the tool is not allowed to get hot. Heating a tool red and hammering or welding on it is not fine, because that changes the hardness of the steel and the tool will fail in service.
Why do breaker chisels break or wear out early?
Very few chisels die of honest work. Most are killed by five habits, and all five are free to fix.
- Blank firing. The breaker is running but the tool is hammering into air, or into a piece that has already broken loose. All that energy goes back into the breaker and the tool instead of into rock. Keep the chisel pressed against solid material before you start the hammer.
- Levering with the tool. Using the boom to prise a boulder loose while the chisel is stuck in it bends the tool sideways. Chisels are extremely strong up and down and weak across. This is what snaps them.
- Working at an angle. The tool should be square to the surface so the blow travels straight down its length. An angled tool wears on one side and puts a bending load through the bushes.
- Hammering one spot too long. If the material has not cracked in about fifteen to thirty seconds, move to a fresh spot. Staying put heats the tip, and hot steel wears fast.
- Running the tool dry. Without grease between the tool and the bushes, both wear together, quickly.
An operator who understands these five will get far more life out of the same steel. It is worth ten minutes of explaining on the first day.
How often should you grease a breaker chisel?
Grease goes in through a nipple on the breaker body, and it reaches the space between the tool shank and the bushes that hold it. Most breaker makers ask for grease roughly every two hours of actual breaking, and again at the start of each shift.
Two practical points matter more than the interval. First, grease with the tool pressed up into the breaker, by resting it on the ground with a little down-pressure from the boom. If the tool is hanging loose, the grease fills the empty space below instead of the working surfaces. Second, ordinary multipurpose grease is not made for this. Breaker work needs a high-temperature chisel paste, because the joint gets far hotter than a normal grease point.
The bushes are the replaceable sleeves the tool slides in. They are wear parts in their own right. When a tool is loose enough to rattle sideways, changing only the chisel will not fix it. Should you buy genuine or aftermarket chisels?
Chisels are one of the few parts where good aftermarket steel is genuinely competitive, because the shape is simple and the quality lives in the heat treatment rather than the design. Plenty of Indian fleets run aftermarket tools without trouble.
The risk is the cheapest end of the market. A tool that is too soft mushrooms within days; one that is too hard cracks instead of wearing. Neither failure is visible in the shop. Buy from a supplier who will stand behind the tool, and if a cheap batch fails early, treat that as the real price. There is no public price list for breaker tools in India. They are quoted against the breaker model, and the same shape can vary a lot in price depending on the steel. Ask for the price of the chisel and a set of bushes together when you enquire about the breaker, because you will buy both.
