Which road construction machines do buyers ask about most?

The order follows the enquiries buyers sent us over the last four months, with no more than two models from one brand.

Which brands make these machines?

The brands with the most models listed in these classes. Each name opens that brand's range.

Who builds India’s roads?

National highways are tendered by NHAI, NHIDCL and the Border Roads Organisation, and state roads by the public works departments and road development corporations. The packages are won by a fairly small group of contractors, and most machine owners reach road work by hiring to one of them or to their sub-contractors. The list is alphabetical, not a ranking.

Company What it builds
Afcons Infrastructure Bridges, tunnels, expressways and marine works
Ashoka Buildcon Highway contracts and toll and annuity roads
Dilip Buildcon Highway contracts across many states, run with a very large fleet of its own machines
G R Infraprojects Highway contracts and hybrid annuity road projects
H.G. Infra Engineering Highway contracts and hybrid annuity road projects
IRB Infrastructure Builds and operates toll roads
KNR Constructions Highways and irrigation works
Larsen & Toubro Expressways, bridges and metro lines
PNC Infratech Highways and airport runways

Who is building which stretch, and who to approach, is covered in our roundup of the EPC companies building India’s highway projects.

Frequently asked questions

Which machines are used in road construction?

Six machine types do most of the work: excavators and dozers for earthwork, wheel loaders for loading, motor graders for shaping each layer, rollers for compaction and backhoe loaders for drains and small jobs. Concrete roads add transit mixers. Pavers and tippers are used too, but they are not listed here.

Which roller is used for which layer?

Soil compactors work the embankment, sub-base and base layers. Tandem rollers roll the bituminous layers behind the paver, and pneumatic tyred rollers knead and seal the surface.

Which machine should a new road contractor buy first?

On rural road work a backhoe loader is usually the safest first machine, because it digs drains, loads and moves between sites on its own wheels. On dedicated road-building a soil compactor is the better first buy. A grader makes sense once a contract can keep it busy.

Where can I see road and highway tenders that are open now?

The tender list on this page shows road, highway and bridge packages that are still open, closing soonest first, with the states they are in. It is rebuilt twice a day, and the tenders page carries every open tender.

Can I finance or insure a machine for this work through DesiMachines?

The finance page compares lenders and lets you work out an EMI, and the insurance page explains what a machine policy covers. Both are linked on this page.
