What counts as land development work?
Land development here means construction machines doing farm and raw-land work: clearing scrub, levelling a field, digging a farm pond or tank, raising bunds and field channels, cutting a farm road, digging orchard pits, and grading a plot before anything is built on it.
A backhoe loader does most of these jobs and drives itself from one farm to the next. Mini and small excavators dig ponds and pits with cleaner sides, dozers clear and push earth, and a small grader finishes farm roads and plots.
This page covers construction machines on that work. Tractors and their implements, laser land levellers and harvesters are farm machines and are not listed on DesiMachines.
Where is this work concentrated in India?
Farm ponds and levelling happen in every district, and what moves the work is the scheme each state runs. The Agricultural Engineering Department of Tamil Nadu hires out its own bulldozers and crawler excavators to farmers for levelling, farm ponds and the desilting of water bodies. The agriculture department of Maharashtra runs a farm pond scheme for individual farmers. In Assam, the Soil Conservation Department carries out the watershed programme funded by the Department of Land Resources.
Across the country, the Mission Amrit Sarovar portal describes the aim as developing and reviving 75 water bodies in each district. Each state page lists the machines, dealers and open tenders for that state.
Which schemes and bodies fund this work?
Machine work on a farm is paid for either by the farmer or through a government scheme. These are the schemes and bodies that pay for ponds, bunds, levelling and watershed work. The list is alphabetical, not a ranking.
