What machines work inside a steel, cement or process plant?

A steel plant, cement plant or refinery is built around its own fixed equipment: blast furnaces, kilns, mills, conveyors and stackers. Around that equipment runs a fleet of mobile machines. Wheel loaders feed raw material and reclaim stockpiles of coal, ore, limestone and clinker. They also load slag and scrap and clean up spillage. Pick and carry cranes lift motors, pipes and spares during shutdowns. Excavators and dozers handle slag, shape stockpiles and do the earthwork when a new unit is added.

Dump trucks, forklifts, EOT cranes, crawler cranes and slag pot carriers also work in these plants. DesiMachines does not list those, so this page covers the loaders, cranes, excavators, dozers and skid steers that we do list.

Which plant machines do buyers ask about most?

The order follows the enquiries buyers sent us over the last four months, with no more than two models from one brand.

Which machines were listed recently?

Machines added to these classes in the last five months, newest first.

Which brands make these machines?

The brands with the most models listed in these classes. Each name opens that brand range.

Which steel, cement and industrial tenders are open now?

Plant, refinery and industrial park packages from our tender desk, closing soonest first.

No tender in this line of work is open as on 1 October 2026. These closed most recently; new ones are added every morning.

Where are India’s steel, cement and process plants?

Steel is made mostly in the east and south. Ministry of Steel figures, compiled by the Joint Plant Committee, put Odisha at the top for crude steel output, followed by Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Karnataka and West Bengal.

Cement plants sit on limestone. In the Indian Bureau of Mines list of large cement plants, the most capacity is in Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh, with large clusters in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Telangana.

For oil refining, the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell lists the most capacity in Gujarat, at Jamnagar, Vadinar and Koyali. Other large refineries include Panipat in Haryana, Paradip in Odisha and Mangaluru in Karnataka. Each state page lists the machines, dealers and tenders for that state.

Who owns India’s steel, cement and process plants?

Plant owners buy some machines for their own yards, but much of the loading, slag handling and maintenance work is given out on contract, which is where a fleet owner finds work. The list is alphabetical, not a ranking.

Company What it runs
ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India Joint venture of ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel; integrated flat steel maker, from iron ore to finished steel
Bharat Petroleum Oil refineries at Mumbai, Kochi and Bina
Indian Oil Corporation Oil refineries at Panipat, Paradip, Koyali, Mathura, Haldia and Barauni, and three in Assam
National Aluminium Company (NALCO) Majority owned by the Government of India; alumina refinery at Damanjodi and aluminium smelter at Angul, both in Odisha
Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Government of India enterprise that runs the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant
Reliance Industries Two oil refineries at Jamnagar in Gujarat
Shree Cement Integrated cement plants, starting with its units at Beawar and Ras in Rajasthan
Steel Authority of India (SAIL) Steel plants at Bhilai, Bokaro, Durgapur and Rourkela, and the IISCO Steel Plant
Tata Steel Steel works at Jamshedpur and a second plant in Odisha, fed by its own iron ore and coal mines
UltraTech Cement Integrated cement plants, grinding units and bulk packaging terminals across India

Plant by plant lists by state are in our roundups of steel companies in India and cement companies in India.

Frequently asked questions

Which machines are used inside a steel or cement plant?

Wheel loaders do most of the mobile work: feeding raw material, reclaiming stockpiles and loading slag and scrap. Pick and carry cranes handle maintenance lifts, skid steers clean tight bays, and excavators and dozers work slag, stockpiles and expansion earthwork. Dump trucks, forklifts and EOT cranes also work there but are not listed here.

What size wheel loader does a plant stockpile need?

Medium loaders of 15 to 30 tonne cover most plant yards, spillage clean-up and truck loading. Large loaders suit big stockpiles of coal, ore or limestone where trucks or hoppers are fed all day. Pick the bucket for the density of the material, since slag and ore are far heavier than coal.

Why do plants use pick and carry cranes?

A pick and carry crane lifts a load and drives with it on its own wheels, so it can move a motor, pump or pipe section across a plant road without setting up outriggers. That makes it the usual machine for shutdown and maintenance lifts. Heavy erection work goes to crawler and truck cranes, which are not listed here.

How does a machine owner get work in a steel or cement plant?

Most plants give out loading, slag handling, cleaning and maintenance support on contract, through tenders or vendor registration with the plant. Contractors then hire or buy the machines. Public sector plants publish their tenders, and the tender list on this page shows plant and industrial park packages when they are open.

Can I finance or insure a machine for this work through DesiMachines?

The finance page compares lenders and lets you work out an EMI, and the insurance page explains what a machine policy covers. Both are linked on this page.
