A crane load chart is the table that tells you exactly how much weight a crane can lift safely at every boom length and working radius. It is the single most important document on any lifting job. Every crane, from a 12 Ton (12,000 kg) Hydra to a 250 Ton crawler crane, ships with one, and reading it correctly is the difference between a clean lift and a tipped machine.

What is a crane load chart?

A load chart is the manufacturer’s official capacity table for one specific crane model. It lists the safe lifting limit for every combination of boom length (how far the arm is extended) and load radius (the horizontal distance from the centre of the crane to the hook).

The chart exists because a crane’s capacity is not one number. The 15 in a “15 Ton” crane is its maximum rating in the best possible position, usually with the boom short and the load kept close. Move the same load further out and the safe limit falls fast. The chart maps that fall, cell by cell, so the operator never has to guess.

Two limits sit behind every cell. Near the crane, the structural limit rules: the boom, ropes and hook can only take so much. Further out, the stability limit takes over: the machine will tip before anything breaks. The chart always prints the lower of the two.

How do you read a crane load chart?

Reading a chart takes three steps. First find your boom length row, then your load radius column, and the cell where they meet is your safe capacity. If your exact radius falls between two columns, always use the next larger radius. Never round in your favour.

Here is an illustrative example for a nominal 15 Ton (15,000 kg) pick and carry crane. These numbers are for learning the format only; your machine’s OEM chart is the only chart that counts.

Notice the pattern: doubling the radius cuts capacity by far more than half. A machine rated 15 Ton lifts barely 6 Ton at 5 metres. This is normal, and it is why the “tonnage” on the boom sticker alone should never decide a lift.

Why does capacity drop as radius increases?

Because a crane works like a see-saw. The counterweight and chassis sit on one side, your load on the other, and the tipping line under the machine is the pivot. Push the load further from that pivot and its pull on that line multiplies. The same 5,000 kg that felt safe at 2 metres can lift the back of the crane off the ground at 6 metres.

Boom length matters for a second reason: a longer boom is itself heavier out front, and it flexes. So even at the same radius, a chart cell for a longer boom setting is usually smaller. On telescopic machines, extend only as much boom as the lift needs.

Direction matters too. Many charts split capacity by lifting quadrant: over the front, over the rear, and over the side. Over-the-side is usually the weakest position because the tipping line is closest to the load. The boom angle indicator in the cabin ties all of this together; a lower boom angle means a longer radius, and the chart cell shrinks with it. Before any lift, check which quadrant the swing will pass through and use the weakest quadrant’s number for the whole lift.

What gets deducted from rated capacity on site?

The chart number is not what you can hang on the hook. Standard deductions come first:

  • Hook block and ball: their own weight counts as load.
  • Slings, chains and lifting tackle: add every kilogram of rigging.
  • Attachments: fly jibs or extensions reduce the base chart, and often carry their own chart.

Then the site conditions speak. Charts assume firm, level ground. Soft shoulder soil, monsoon slush, a slope, or lifting over the side instead of over the front all cut real capacity below the printed cell. Wind on a large load surface does the same. Good operators build in a margin for all of this, and good supervisors ask for outrigger mats or steel plates before questioning the margin, kyunki zameen dhokha de sakti hai: the ground can betray you.

How do you read a Hydra or Farana load chart?

India’s most common crane is the pick and carry crane, the Hydra or Farana of every yard. Its chart works the same way but with two differences worth respecting.

First, most pick and carry lifting happens on tyres, with no outriggers, so the stability limit arrives much earlier than the sticker tonnage suggests. The rated 12 to 15 Ton applies only at the minimum radius with the boom pulled right in. Second, these machines carry loads while moving, and the chart’s travel capacity is lower than its standing capacity. The duty chart in the cabin separates the two; read both columns before you commit.

The most common chart mistake on Indian sites follows from those two differences. An operator parks in one spot and extends the full boom to reach across the yard, because moving the machine feels like extra work. On the chart, that long reach may leave barely 2 Ton of capacity on a 15 Ton machine. The safer habit costs five minutes: drive closer, keep the boom short, keep the radius small. What are the load chart safety rules?

Five rules keep chart reading honest on Indian sites:

  • Know the load’s real weight before the lift. Weigh it, read the drawing, or ask for the packing list. Guessing is how tip-overs start.
  • Use the next larger radius when in doubt, never the smaller one.
  • Deduct rigging weight every single time.
  • Treat the chart as a ceiling, not a target. OEM charts already sit below the tipping load, but that margin belongs to the manufacturer’s assumptions of firm level ground, not to you.
  • If the lift plan needs the last cell of the chart, get a bigger crane. The most expensive lift is the one that fails.

One more habit separates professional sites from risky ones: a single signaller. When the operator cannot see the load or the landing point, one trained person gives the signals and everyone else stays silent. The best load chart in the world cannot save a lift where three people are shouting three different instructions.
