What counts as bridge and tunnel construction equipment?

It is the set of machines that builds a crossing from the foundation up: river and road bridges, flyovers, road over bridges and road under bridges, viaducts, elevated corridors, and road, rail and hydro tunnels. A good share of the machine work on a bridge happens before the deck. Excavators dig the well and pile cap pits, concrete reaches the piers by pump or straight from the mixer, and a pick and carry crane moves steel cages, shuttering and small girders around the yard.

In a drill and blast tunnel the face is drilled, blasted and the broken rock is loaded out, and that loading needs machines sized for the tube. The specialist plant on these sites is not listed on DesiMachines: piling rigs, launching girders, crawler and tower cranes, truck-mounted boom pumps, tunnel boring machines, drilling jumbos and shotcrete machines. The machines below are the ones a fleet owner can put to work on the same site.

Which bridge and tunnel machines do buyers ask about most?

The order follows the enquiries buyers sent us over the last four months, with no more than two models from one brand.

Which machines were listed recently?

Machines added to these classes in the last five months, newest first.

Which brands make these machines?

The brands with the most models listed in these classes. Each name opens the models of that brand.

Where is bridge and tunnel work concentrated in India?

Tunnels and high bridges sit mostly in the Himalaya and the north-east. The Border Roads Organisation, which works under the Ministry of Defence, built the Atal Tunnel under the Rohtang Pass in Himachal Pradesh and the Sela Tunnel in Arunachal Pradesh. According to Konkan Railway, it built the Chenab and Anji rail bridges and the tunnels on its section of the Udhampur, Srinagar and Baramulla rail link in Jammu & Kashmir.

NHIDCL, a company of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, runs the Z-Morh and Zojila tunnel works on the Sonamarg to Kargil road into Ladakh. Its own project list also covers Uttarakhand, Sikkim, Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura.

In the plains the work is mostly river crossings, flyovers, road over bridges at level crossings and elevated roads in cities. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has listed the Ganga and Varuna elevated corridors in Uttar Pradesh among its approved projects. Each state page lists the machines, dealers and tenders for that state.

Who builds India’s bridges and tunnels?

National highway bridges and tunnels are tendered by NHAI and NHIDCL, border roads by the Border Roads Organisation, and rail bridges by the railway zones and rail companies. Machine owners usually reach the work by hiring to the contractors below or to their sub-contractors. The list is alphabetical, not a ranking.

Company or body What it builds
Afcons Infrastructure Bridges, flyovers, elevated corridors, metro works and road and rail tunnels; part of the Shapoorji Pallonji group
Border Roads Organisation Under the Ministry of Defence; builds roads, bridges, tunnels and airfields in border areas
Cemindia Projects Formerly ITD Cementation; tunnels with tunnel boring machines, foundations, marine structures and highways
Hindustan Construction Company Rail-cum-road bridges, rail and metro tunnels and hydro power projects
Ircon International Government company under the Ministry of Railways; rail lines, bridges and flyovers
J. Kumar Infraprojects Flyovers, bridges, elevated and underground metro and tunnelling in cities
Konkan Railway Corporation Government of India undertaking; built the Chenab and Anji rail bridges in Jammu and Kashmir
Larsen & Toubro Bridges, elevated corridors, high-speed rail viaducts and road, rail and hydro tunnels
Megha Engineering & Infrastructures Contractor for the Zojila road tunnel; also irrigation, power and water works
Patel Engineering Tunnels, dams and hydroelectric projects, plus roads and bridges

Frequently asked questions

Which machines are used in bridge construction?

Excavators dig the foundations, concrete pumps and transit mixers place the concrete, pick and carry cranes lift steel and shuttering, and backhoe loaders, dozers and compactors build the approaches. Piling rigs, launching girders, crawler cranes and boom pumps are used too, but they are not listed here.

Which machines work inside a tunnel?

In a drill and blast tunnel the rock is drilled, blasted and then loaded out, and wheel loaders and excavators sized for the tube do that loading. Concrete pumps and mixers line the tunnel. Tunnel boring machines, drilling jumbos and shotcrete machines are specialist plant and are not listed here.

Why are long-reach excavators used on river bridges?

The longer boom lets the machine dig and clean a riverbed, a well or a cofferdam from the bank or a firm platform, without going into the water. It digs and lifts less at full reach, so match the bucket to the boom.

Which concrete pump suits bridge and tunnel work?

A stationary pump with a pipeline can send concrete a long way and up a tall pier, so it suits piers, decks and tunnel linings. Truck-mounted boom pumps are also used where the pour is within reach of the boom; they are not listed here.

Where can I see bridge and tunnel tenders that are open now?

The tender list on this page shows bridge, flyover, road over bridge, underpass and tunnel packages that are still open, closing soonest first. It is rebuilt twice a day, and the tenders page carries every open tender.

Can I finance or insure a machine for this work through DesiMachines?

The finance page compares lenders and lets you work out an EMI, and the insurance page explains what a machine policy covers. Both are linked on this page.
