What counts as canal construction equipment?

Canal and dam work is earthwork first and concrete second. Excavators cut the canal section and dig the dam foundation. Dozers spread the fill and soil compactors roll the banks and the dam body layer by layer. Graders keep the road on the canal bank in shape. Then the concrete starts: transit mixers and concrete pumps feed the lining, the falls and regulators, the aqueducts and the barrage piers.

The work does not stop when the project is handed over. Canals and tanks silt up, and long-reach excavators clean them from the bank year after year.

Some machines on these sites are not listed on DesiMachines: canal lining pavers, draglines, dredgers, drilling and grouting rigs, and the tippers that carry the earth.

Which canal and dam machines do buyers ask about most?

The order follows the enquiries buyers sent us over the last four months, with no more than two models from one brand.

Which brands make these machines?

The brands with the most models listed in these classes. Each name opens the full range of that brand.

Where is irrigation and dam work concentrated in India?

Dams follow the rivers and the rainfall. According to the Central Water Commission’s National Register of Large Dams, Maharashtra has far more large dams than any other state, followed by Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat. Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Rajasthan and Odisha come next. The same register shows Maharashtra with the most large dams under construction.

River links are the next wave. The National Water Development Agency records that the foundation stone of the Ken-Betwa link was laid at Khajuraho in Madhya Pradesh, and that Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and the Centre signed the agreement for the modified Parbati-Kalisindh-Chambal link. In Andhra Pradesh, the Polavaram Project Authority oversees the Polavaram Irrigation Project.

Each state page lists the machines, dealers and open tenders for that state.

Who awards and builds canal and dam work?

Most canal, dam and lift irrigation work is tendered by state water resources and irrigation departments and their corporations, with central bodies planning, funding or watching over the larger projects. The contractors below build them, and a fleet owner usually reaches the work through one of them or a sub-contractor. The list is alphabetical, not a ranking.

Company or body What it builds or does
Central Water Commission Technical body under the Ministry of Jal Shakti; monitors centrally funded irrigation projects and keeps the National Register of Large Dams
Hindustan Construction Company Dams and barrages, hydro power, tunnels and lift irrigation projects
KNR Constructions Highways and irrigation projects for state irrigation departments
Larsen & Toubro Lift and micro irrigation projects through its water business, along with water supply and treatment plants
Megha Engineering & Infrastructures Lift irrigation schemes, canals, river links, tunnels and pipelines
National Water Development Agency Studies and plans river links such as Ken-Betwa for the Ministry of Jal Shakti
NCC Water and irrigation works, along with buildings and roads
Patel Engineering Dams, tunnels, hydroelectric and irrigation projects
Polavaram Project Authority Oversees the Polavaram Irrigation Project in Andhra Pradesh
WAPCOS Government company under the Ministry of Jal Shakti; engineering consultancy for water resources, power and infrastructure

Frequently asked questions

Which machines are used in canal and dam construction?

Excavators cut the canal section and dig foundations, dozers spread the fill, soil compactors roll the banks and the dam body, and graders keep the bank road in shape. Transit mixers and concrete pumps feed the lining and the structures. Lining pavers, draglines, dredgers, grouting rigs and tippers are used too, but they are not listed here.

Which machine is used for canal desilting?

A long-reach excavator working from the bank does most canal and tank desilting, because it reaches the bed without going into the water. Small channels are often cleaned with a standard excavator or a backhoe loader. Large rivers and reservoirs need dredgers, which are not listed here.

How is a canal lined with concrete?

The canal is cut and trimmed to shape and the slopes are compacted first. Concrete then goes on the bed and the slopes, laid by a lining paver on large canals or placed in panels by hand on smaller ones, with transit mixers bringing the concrete. Lining pavers are not listed here.

Who awards canal and dam contracts?

Most canal, dam and lift irrigation work is tendered by state water resources or irrigation departments and their corporations. The Central Water Commission monitors irrigation projects that receive central funding, and the contractors who win the packages hire machines and sub-contractors for the earthwork.

Where can I see irrigation tenders that are open now?

The tender list on this page shows canal, dam, barrage and lift irrigation packages that are still open, closing soonest first. It is rebuilt twice a day, and the tenders page carries every open tender.

Can I finance or insure a machine for this work through DesiMachines?

The finance page compares lenders and lets you work out an EMI, and the insurance page explains what a machine policy covers. Both are linked on this page.
